The War Between The States
Kansas v. Hawaii
This week, as Obama vacations in his home state of Hawaii, I wonder about his dual origins. Not the melodramatic racial adjustment (boring!) but how does a kid with a Kansas soul adjust to the Hawaiian paradise? Tonight's music is separated into four chapters:
1. The soul of Kansas
2. The paradise of Hawaii
3. Fish out of water
4. New Orleans, the poor man's paradise
And tonight, the first winner of the WWOZ Invitational, Ben Pagac of Annapolis, Maryland, who submitted Billy Wirtz's song "Mennonite Surf Party." Ben, enjoy your three wishes and make sure you submit them in writing to avoid becoming the punchline of a joke.
Tonight's interstitials are all from the Wonderful Wizard of Oz - the origination of the WWOZ acronym.
P.S. Make sure you click on the Dr. John video at the end of the playlist.
Playlist Tracks
Randy Newman "Beehive State" Guilty Newman's naming of this song is curious. It starts with "The delegate from Kansas.." and only has a tag about the Beehive state of Utah. The video from KC, Kansas is that kind of deprecating tongue-in-cheek midwest humor that I love so much. The music starts at about 2:20. |
Frogman Henry "I'm A Country Boy" Cosimo Matassa Story Proper 2007 Nice post-Katrina interview with Frogman with concert footage from the Madison Square Garden show. Frogman's uniquely west bank personality it on display |
Fats Domino "Country Boy" They Call Me The Fat Man Trailer from the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. |
John Mooney "Country Boy" Late Last Night |
Johnny Otis "Country Girl" The Best of R&B V one Video of Otis is why he went onto have his own show. he must have known how much better he could do after seeing this scene. |
Barrance Whitfield "Ride the Mule Across Kansas" Another version of Johnny Otis' Hand Jive, this time from Otis' show. Music is better, dancers make sense, and you know Otis had ears - Lionel Hampton was the next act. |
Little Richard "Kansas City" Specialty Sessions Specialty Richard video |
Ronettes "Paradise" Back to Mono The girl with the hair. Another Ronnie feature that Phil Spector desired. |
Shangri-Las "Remember (Walkin in the Sand)" 1960's Happy Days Mary Weiss, another girl who could be a Breck girl. |
Hoosier Hot Shots "When Johnny Brings Lelahani Home" Everybody Stomp Proper A song about the Obama bringing an exotic Hawaiian beauty home to Kansas |
Da Mokettes and the Incredible Q Band "Palolo Valley Girls" 45 RPM compliments of WFMU.org And that exotic Hawaiian beauty turns out to be a Palolo Valley Girl. This is the documentary music video made by that Palolo Valley girl. |
Big Maceo "Big City Blues" The Specialty Story Specialty The age-old story of the small towner running into the walls of the big city. |
Jimmy Reed "Bright Lights, Big City" Super Soul Blues V2 The big city adjustment as undertaken by Jimmy Reed's better half. How are you going to reconcile that Kansas soul in the big, fast city? |
Sam Cooke "Fools Paradise" The Rhythm and The Blues After the hubris of a quasi-adjustment to the big city, you can start living in a fools paradise. Link is to Cooke and Muhammad Ali singing together. |
Stormy "Fools Paradise" The Best of Spinett Records Spinett |
Frogman Henry "Ain't Got No Home" The New Orleans Hit Story Frogman singing about anomie. This was originally released as Anomie Blues in 1893 by the Emile Durkhiem Quartet but unfortunately without a record company (or even records) the tune was destined to failure. Years later, Emile's ancestors unsuccessfully agitated for song-writing royalties. |
Billy Wirtz "Mennonite Surf Party" Backslider's Tractor Pull Submitted by Ben Pagac, winner of the WWOZ Invitational. See the Programming Forum to submit your music and thoughts for upcoming shows. |
Galactic "Welcome to New Orleans" Chapter Four - New Orleans, the Poor Man's Paradise |
Sub Dudes "Poor Man's Paradise" Poor Man's Paradise We don't care about any place outside of New Orleans because we know we're in paradise. A poor man's paradise. As long as we can stay insular we'll always have paradise |
Randy Newman "New Orleans Wins the War" Guilty! Warner Brothers Newman sings about the President giving a speech in Jackson Square about how New Orleans won the war. A caller told me that Calvin Coolidge also gave a speech from Jackson Square about keeping New Orleans safe from flooding. Newman refers Coolidge in his song "Louisiana 1927" as, "that little fat man with a clipboard in his hand." According to John Barry's Rising Tide, it was actually pre-President Hubert Hoover who directed the 1927 flood recovery. My conclusion, don't believe anything coming from Presidential impostors making speechs from Jackson Square. Especially if they promise levees that won't drown us. |
Clarence Samuels "New Orleans" Unknown Samuels was another great blues shouter who didn't quite make it under the limbo bar of commercial success. A New Orleans guy with all the talent necessary to become another Roy Brown but unfortunately we just have a handful of these great recordings. |
Kermit Ruffins "What is New Orleans" The Barbecue Swingers Live Sentimental about those days about three years ago when the world saw flood water, physical destruction, and governmental breakdowns but New Orleans fans saw another layer of the disaster. We feared a culture loss and it felt like a very personal and profound loss. |
Fats Domino "Do You Know What it Means ..." They Call Me The Fat Man |
The Pfister Sisters "I Wish I'd Never Seen New Orleans" New Orleans Our sentiments girls. |
Earl King "No City Like New Orleans" Big Ole Box of New Orleans I'm also thinking about King's line about loss in Iron Cupid; "...it all goes down the drain..." Video from Kings funeral. |
Armand St. Martin "Back in New Orleans" Alligator Ball I'm getting all these sentimental calls about the storm. Unfortunately so many people also want to complain about the Saints. The relationship between the two? Both our New Orleans levees and our football team are known for their defensive weaknesses. |
Fats Domino "Walking to New Orleans" My Blue Heaven We all made that post-Katrina trip back to the city. |
Kermit Ruffins "Drop Me Off In New Orleans" Big Ole Box of New Orleans Kermit consistently hits it with lyrics that capture the city's love affair with itself. |
Swift Jewel Cowboys "Little Willie Green (From New Orleans)" Western Swing and Country Jazz |
Roy Newman "Sadie Green (The Vamp From New Orleans)" Western Swing and Country Jazz |
Big Daddy O "Louisiana Moon" Deranged Covers Rabadash Tonight's full moon seems a little deeper blue just as predicted in this song. |
Going Back to New Orleans "Dr. John" The Very Best of Doctor John Mac and band in full dress with dancers from the 1970s. They tried to add some production to the piece and it works. Check the playlist a couple weeks ago for another classic Dr. John video. |
Larry Williams "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" Specialty Story Specialty |
Don and Dewey "Justine" Specialty Story Specialty |
Roddy Jackson "Moose on the Loose" Specialty Story Specialty |
Frank Motley "Frantic" Specialty Story Specialty |
Jerry Byrne "Lights Out" Specialty Story Specialty |
Don and Dewey "Koko Joe" Specialty Story Specialty |
Irma Thomas "She's Taken My Part" Night Train Night Train |
Casanova and the Chants "Geraldine" Night Train to New Orleans |
Johnny Fuller "Haunted House" Specialty Story Specialty |
Don and Dewey "Big Boy Pete" Specialty Story Specialty Okay, I got my Specialty needs satiated. |
