Program: Swing and Big Band with The Minister of Swing
We spent most of the evening in the 1930's and 1940's highlighting the music of two of Duke Ellington's most prominent sidemen--trumpeter Cootie Williams (born July 24, 1910) and alto sax man Johnny Hodges (born July 25, 1907). Most of these sessions are smaller groups made up of Ellington's men with either Williams or Hodges as leader and Duke playing piano. Near the end of the program we feature Cootie Williams leading his own organization and showcase music from 1941-1946. We honour singer Jo Stafford during the middle of the program who passed on Wednesday, July 16th at the age of 90. A brief selection of her work with the Pied Pipers for Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra is highlighted.
