Playlist for July 13, 2008 from 12:01AM - 04:00AM

Current New Orleans Time: Fri, 4:26am

Playlist Date & Time: 7/13/2008 12:01AM - 4:00AM

Program: Archived Playlists for Jamie Dell'Apa

Songs that are titled with someone's name. No verbs just a name. Figure that the name represents someone who inspired the musicians to compose a song. The really interesting game is to hear all these couple minute stories about a person that is unknown to the world but a huge inspiration to the musician.

Playlist Tracks

Shirley Ellis
Name Game
45

The kick off for tonight's show is the Name Game a novelty song about Names.
Art Neville
Bo Diddley
Legacy

One of the most popular name songs is actually a departure from the usual pattern as Bo Diddley uniquely wrote about himself. Usually the name song is about someone else and someone of the opposite gender.
Red Stick Ramblers
Dinah
Bring It On Down

A South LA band, doing perhaps the best known Name song with their funky mandolin sound.
Fats Domino
I Can't Go One (Rosalie)
They Call Me the Fat Man
Imperial

Fats has a handful of Name songs but this might be the most well known. You know we are going to get esoteric with this theme but lets build a common ground first.
Richard Berry
Louie, Louie
The Best of R&B

Berry does a very funky New Orleans-ish version of this classic.
Darrell Rhodes
Lou Lou
Rockin Bones
Rhino

A play on Louie Louie
Neville Brothers
Lil Liza Jane
Live at Tips

A set of Little or Lil terms of affection starting off with this New Orleans standard.
Snooks Eaglin
Little Eva
The Complete Imperial Recordings
Imperial
Joe Berry
Little Jewel of the Vieux Carre
New Orleans Popeye Party

This is a very good collection of early NOLA R&B.
The Kingsman
Little Latin Lupe Lu
Best of The Kingsman
Fats Domino
Little Mary
They Call Me the Fat Man
Imperial

Fats has a handful of Name songs and I was not too sure about this Name theme until I noticed how many songs Fats did with a single name. I imagine Fats had someone in mind for all these songs. Someone who inspired him and he turned out these two to three minute musical stories about these people. Then I saw how many songs have been written about people. We all like to tell stories and we love to talk about people. Musicians take this universal behavior and set it to music.
Swift Jewel Cowboys
Little Willie Green (From New Orleans)
Western Swing and Country Jazz
Proper

Swift Jewel Cowboys are playing jazz and R&B for a rural white population and their music sounds remarkably similar to Cab Calloway. This Little Willie Green song is over 50 years old so a safe assumption is he is not related to Mean Willie Green.
Cookie and the Cupcakes
Mathilda
Kings of Swamp Pop

Seeing Cookie perform this song at Jazz Fest remains one of my favorite Jazz Fest moments. The first in a set of swamp pop songs again featuring only a Name
Phil Phillips
Verdi Mae
Sea of Love

Phil put out a great deal of music that was pretty outside but Verdi Mae was a tremendous song.
Shirley
John Fred and His Playboys
History of

John Fred reminded me of Phil Phillips, either a knock out hit or a big miss. Shirley was big and I never seem to tire of the song.
Bobby Lee Trammel
Shirley Lee
Rockin Bones
Rhino

Another play on Shirley.
Tiny Tim
Remember Your Name and Address
For All My Little Friends

One of just a couple songs not featuring a person's name tonight but the perfect lead in for the next song.
El Vez
Maria Is The Name
How Great Thou Art

El Vez, the love child of Elvis and Charro begins his show with this song.
Sparrow
Maria
45 rpm

The music of Catholic countries have plenty of Mary and Maria Name songs. No surprise, there was a movement to name female infants Mary in the fifties making for great musical inspirations a couple decades later.
Mongo Santamaria
Chano Pozo
Skin to Skin

A set of music about males is so different than the bulk of tonights songs with female names and wistful even romantic lyrics.. Chano Pozo is the great conga player who I suspect inspired many.
El Vez
Cesar Chavez
Graciasland
Jeff Daniels
Switch Blade Sam
Meladee Records Louisians
Meladee

No romance or wistfulness here, switchblades, police, guns, fights, partying, etc - that is a typical song inspired by a guy Name.
The Persuasions
T.A. Thompson
Man Oh Man
Tommy Blake
Flat Foot Sam
Essential Sun Rockabilly
Sun

More characters acting goofy. Kind of like an audio version of the Man Show.
Charlie Sayles and the Union Mission Band
Coolie and Eddie
unreleased
n/a

Guy songs.... Coolie and Eddie with their misadventures in alcohol. Sayles has good street credibility as he was staying at the Union Mission on 14th Street in Washington, DC when he recorded this. Thanks to pianist on this song, Ben Pagac, for passing on this recording.
Roy Newman and His Boys
Sadie Green the Vamp of New Orleans
Western Swing and Country Music
Proper
Rainbows
Mary Lee
Vocal Groups

Another round of Mary songs this time with compound double names.
Cookie and The Cupcakes
Mary Lou Doin the Popeye
Kings of Swamp Pop
Howlin Wolf
Mary Sue
Chess Box
Chess
The Four Blazes
Mary Jo
Vocal Groups

Say these four Mary songs really quickly.
Tom Waits
Muriel
Foreign Affairs

Such a sentimental song. I am starting to prefer Waits instrumentals but not because Waits lyrics are less than poetic. This song with a simple piano and vocal is timeless.
Dr. John
Candy
In a Sentimental Mood
Chris Conner
All About Ronnie
All About Ronnie

We are going to ignore the couple extra words in the title because this is such a classic Name song.
Blossum Dearie
My Attorney Bernie
Our Favorite Songs

The Frischberg classic done in the unique female voice of Blossum Dearie.
Judy Collins
Suzanne
Forever: An Anthology
Van Morrison
Natalia
Wavelength

Turn up your radio and meet your neighbors. Tell em it was my fault.
Elvis Costello
Allison

Yes, Phil is singing about that Anne Rice, that Lestat, and that Stanley Rice all of New Orleans.
Tin Men
Mr. Sellack
Modern Lovers
Self

Not that Mr. Sellack of Hawaii.
Rubaiyats
Omar Khayyam
Get Low Down: The Soul of New Orleans

Yes, that Omar....
