Creole Kings of New Orleans

I missed last weeks show, so here's birthday wishes for the King. "Clifton Chenier (June 25, 1925 - December 12, 1987) a Creole French speaking native of Opelousas, Louisiana, was an eminent performer and recording artist of Zydeco music, a blend of Cajun and Creole music with R&B, jazz, and blues influences. "Dale Hawkins (born Delmar Allen Hawkins on August 22, 1936 in Goldmine, Louisiana) is a pioneer American Rock singer, songwriter, and rhythm guitarist who is often called the architect of the swamp rock boogie. (Fellow rockabilly pioneer Ronnie Hawkins is his cousin.) In 1957, Hawkins was playing at Shreveport, Louisiana clubs, and although his music was influenced by the new rock and roll style of Elvis Presley and the guitar sounds of Scotty Moore, Hawkins blended that with the uniquely heavy blues sound of black Louisiana artists for his recording of his swamp-rock classic Susie Q. Fellow Louisiana guitarist and future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer James Burton provided the signature riff and solo. The song was chosen as one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll." from Wikipedia

Gil-Scott Heron is scheduled to play this weekend in New Orleans, at one of the Essence Fest's Superlounges. He wrote this song for Gary Tyler, who has been in Prison at Angola since the Seventies, for murder. It is widely thought the he is innocent. He remains in Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola to this day. Find out more at this website; http://www.freegarytyler.com/index.html
