Program: Archived Playlists for Jamie Dell'Apa
As always a couple current events songs to make Peggy Lou laugh as she goes out the door - Flag Day and Juneteenth tonight. The big set tonight is all about insects so put on your DEET and start scratching your ear with your foot. Concluding the show with a two song salute to the cartoon character Underdog.
When criminals of this world appear and break the laws that they should fear
and frighten all who see or hear the cry goes out both far and near for Underdog, Underdog
Speed of lightning, roar of thunder, fighting all who rob or plunder.
Underdog, Underdog, Underdog, Underdog
When in the world the headlines read of those who's hearts are filled with greed
who rob and steal from those who need he will right this wrong with blinding speed goes Underdog, Underdog
Sick em Underdog!

Dale Hawkins
Suzy Q
Rockin Bones
Rhino
Hawkins is a well known Louisiana rockabilly legend and Suzy Q was one of his big hits but as always we work the other end of an artists output - the stinkers, the overly melodramatic and the pretentious. Like for instance the next song penned by Dale Hawkins that is so bad that it can only be played once a year - today on Flag Day

Maurice Ogden
The Flag

Hawkins wrote this and the rhythm section even sounds faintly like Hawkins Suzy Q but the pretentiousness meter is higher than a giant flag at an Veterans Memorial Highway new car dealership.

Louis Jordan
Juneteenth
Let The Good Times Roll
Bear Family
Louis gives a musical history of the Juneteenth celebration. Slavery was banned in 1865 but neither the word or the law got out to the field for months. It arrived Galveston on June 19th and led to street celebrations which is credited to being the origination of Juneteenth. However, slavery is still a well established institution throughout the world. It is as near as the sexual slavery on the US-Mexico border in euphemistically-called boys towns and throughout the third world. Classic slavery still thrives in the Middle East and Africa where the the particularly vicious form includes child soldiers. And those depraved hearts who hired, housed, fed, and then did not pay but provided plenty of threats to Spanish speakers in post-Katrina New Orleans were subscribing to the same long-standing human instincts of cruelty. Speaking of the human instinct of cruelty, have you gotten the latest round of internet hatchet emails directed at Obama? The slick productions are institutional propaganda but the message is the same - hate and dehumanize the difference.

Insect noises
A recording of insects taken from WFMU.org website
The Insectorium has opened at the foot of Canal Street replacing the Insectorium I had in my refrigerator after Katrina.

|
Robbie Fulks
Wedding of the Bugs
Love these songs that list what all the insects are doing at an event. This is second only to Big Jay McNeeley upcoming song.

|
Dick Jacobs and His Orchestra
Winged Death From the Deadly Mantis
Themes From Horror Movies
from WFMU.org
Dick has a spoken narration from the horror movie that fades into his playing of the movie theme. The music is too specialized of a listening but the narration is perfect.

Big Jay McNeeley
Insect Ball
The insects are having a social gathering that Nell Nolan of the Times Picayune missed. This set is 100% male performers probably for the same reasons that my sister Ande called on her brothers to remove bugs from her room. Why is a boy's fascination with bugs in proportion to a girl's revulsion?

|
Gene and Wendell
The Roach
Hairspray
This cd soundtrack is one of the greatest collections of roots music. Larry Benecewitz of the Baltimore Blue Society did a great job selecting and licensing much of the music on the original movie soundtrack and much of his work carried over onto this soundtrack recording. Larry was also recruited by South Louisiana record company heir Eddie Schuler, Jr. to recoup the music lost by Schuler, Sr. at Goldband. Larry had the original 45 rpm recordings in mint condition so Eddie jr. spent a long time in Baltimore before the cold and boredom drove him back to Louisiana.

instrumentals that sound like crawling bugs must be boys-only inspirations for making music.

So does Chris Watson pay these Beetles scale or just some apple peelings?
|
|
Milton Allen
Don't Bug Me Baby
Get Hot of Go Home
RCA
This is the same cd that contains all the New Orleans rockabilly star, Joe Clay's recordings and a bunch of other similarly great but passed over rockabilly performers.

Mary Chapin Carpenter
The Bug
Come On, Come On
This exception to the boy / girl rule on insect motivations proves the rule. Mary is the only female performer of an insect song tonight but unlike the boys who are motivated to write a song by an insects real or imagined life, Mary's song is about smashing a bug on a car windshield. As separate from an insects life as possible but completely in line with my sister's motivation to impersonally remove all insects from her life.

Buster Benton
Spider in my Stew
Jewel Spotlights the Blues
Jewel
The classic food that bites back. Reminds me of the Three Stooges skit where the clams chowder spray the Stooges but then again, most things remind me of this skit.

Jay McShann
Bar Fly Blues
Mercury R&B Story

There are plenty of bar fly songs so we are limiting ourselves to just this one by the Last of the Blue Devils, Jay McShann

Curtis Mayfield

Superfly
I know it is not about bugs but we can not exclude Curtis Mayfield and this classic song on a technicality from this set.

Love Bug Crawl
There is also a rockabilly or country song for every occasion, noun and situation.
|
|
Duke Ellington
Kissing Bug
Black Brown and ,,,
A female vocalist but you know some XY chromosome wrote this song and since it really isn't about insects it made it into Duke's songbook.

Sonny Burgess
Itchy
Hittin That Jug
Sonny was great at the 2007 Ponderosa Stomp and the harp playing on this piece sounds like that itchy feeling you get when you watch a documentary about bugs.
|
|
B. Bumble and the Stingers
Nut Rocker
1960s Happy Days anthology
We are out of insect lyrics (where is Slim Harpo - Queen Bee?) but we the band names are too good to exclude them from the set.

Surfin With The Astronauts
Still playing that reverb heavy band from 1960s Boulder, Colorado. Next decade I am sure to be sick of this sound. Send me an e-mail if you want a list of youtube videos of the Astronauts playing. It is very funny.
