Playlist Tracks

Jeremy Lyons
50 cent

Walking to the radio studio through the French Quarter I was approached by an budding public radio on-air fund raiser with this beginning plea. I'm a bit more seasoned in public radio, so I gave him a sidewalk tutorial about the importance of repeating the phone number and defining the reason for his plea. He then sand me this song.
Amos Milburn
One Scotch, One Bourbon and One Beer
The Best of R&B V one

There are so many drinking songs that I would have to build a new radio station just to play the complete list of topical drinking songs. Being a bit more practical, I narrowed tonight's show down from rum, whiskey, scotch, bourbon, wine etc. to just beer songs when someone called complaining that the music made them crave beer's Siamese Twin, cigarettes.

So I am discarding the four billion country and western songs about beer and cigarettes and I'm thinking about the chorus from this Amos Milburn song. Okay see if I can stick with only beer songs and only let in an occasional polka or schlocky country songs.
Bob Dorough and Fats Waller
Better than Anything and Hold Tight
2007

These are out of sequence and should preceed Amos Milburn. The brain trust is revamping the web site so pretty soon the playlist will become a sort of blog about the music you are hearing.
Dave Bartholomew
Who Drank My Beer When I Was In The Rear
Cosimo Matassa Story

2007

Go buy yourself a 40oz at Cosimo's grocery store at Dauphine and St. Phillip.
Billy Valentine
Beer Drinking Baby
Mercury R&B Story 1944 to 55
Mercury

Outside of country music there are not many songs about women beer drinkers.
Tom Waits
Warm Beer and Cold Women
Nighthawks at the Diner

The sequel song to this Waits late night remorse might be Cold Coffee and Crossed Legs.
Heileman Old Style
Beer Song

Ooompa! Achtune everybody sing!
Brave Combo
In Heaven There Is No Beer
Polkas For a Gloomy World

Brave Combo just made a rare appearance in New Orleans at the Blue Nile and I am kicking myself for missing them. The best dancing band ever...
Hank Thompson
A Broken Heart and a Glass of Beer
A Proper Introduction to Hank Thompson
Proper

RIP Hank.
Louis Jordan
What is Use of Getting Sober
Louis Jordan
Bear Family

A nine cd set by my favorite record label. If you get a Bear Family anthology, you have the definitive collection.
Checker
I Wasn't Thinkin I Was Drinkin
Vocal Groups Classic Doo Wop

We are losing the relative romanticism of drinking beer to the dark side.
Corky Jones
Rhythm and Blues
Rockin Bones
Rhino
2005

This collection of bad kid rockabilly is so spectacular that I have not done a show without doing a song from this collection.
Jimmy Liggins & His 3 D Music
Drunk
The R&B Box
Rhino Atlantic

Just like the audio beer drinker we have created, the mood is getting darker.
Trooper Jim Foster
Four on the Floor and a Fifth Under the Seat

This is a real singing trooper supposedly performing warning song based on his experiences. The warning I take away is stay away from corny songs.
The Kidds
Drunk, Drunk, Drunk
Cosimo Matassa Story
Proper
2007

All this drinking of beer makes me want to light up a cigarette and further enhance my bar stool attractiveness.
Commander Cody
Smoke Smoke Smoke
Too Much Fun
MCI

The classic
Michelle Shocked
The Chain Smoker
The Texas Campfire Tapes

Michelle has moved away from New Orleans but I picked up this cd the other day and was again surprised by the quality of her musicl
Snooks Eaglin
Lipstick Traces
Out of Nowhere
Black Top

An excuse to stick Snooks into a set.
Lucky Millinder
Chew Tobacco Rag
Apollo Jump
Proper

Who made those spitting noises? An uncredited audio artist who had a strong performance in a very limited role.
Washboard Chaz
Oh Oh Oh
Mix It Up
Self

An import to New Orleans, Chaz is starting to become recognized for his inherent talent. A great talent.
Larry Evans aka james Wayne
Junco Returns

Love these answer songs - especially to New Orleans standards
Snuffy Smith
Angola

The Junco Partners always end up in Angola - the antithesis of the emerald city of Oz (or as we say around here the emerald studios wwOZ).
Big Al Downing
Down on the Farm

Angola's prison was called \\\"The Farm\\\" but I'm not sure Al ....
Lynn August
Jure'

Jure' is a primitive version of zydeco and recalls the field hollers that preceded blues singing. Just a bit more Louisiana
Jimmy Peters and Ring Dance Singers
Gradn bois Zydeco
Rounder

An even more primitive sounding jure as we end the set that took us up to \"The Farm.\"
Earl Palmer
It All Went Down the Drain
Guitar King
Fuel

King recorded this cd with Roomful of Blues and the combination worked well however this song was played only to kick off a set of great guitar players from that most unlikely of cities, Washington, D.C. Why D.C. nurtures spectacular roots music guitar players is beyond me but here are three of them.
Bobby Parker
Bobby Q.

The guitarist that John Lennon claimed to emulate.
Danny Gatton
Canadian Sunset
The Humbler Stakes His Claim
Powerhouse
2008

Gatton's chops would have broken John Lennon's brain pan.
Link Ray
Deacon Jones and Turnpike USA

A non-native of D.C., Link Ray established himself in D.C.. He remains idolized by guitar players who started in rock but succumb to exploring the roots of their first musical love. When they look into the fuzz tone of Link Ray and discover that same battered amplifier tone in country and western music, then these formerly rock guitarists are forever looking for the roots of that sound that once was the center of their musical perspective. Wait until they discover New Orleans music and jazz!
Joe Liggins
Pink Champagne

A set break and I love this song.
Johnny Otis
Call Operator 210
Mercury R&B Story
Mercury

Getting a great deal of telephone calls tonight so a two song salute to you:

Hightone

I forgot to list this as the finale to the cigarette set.
Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs
Wooly Bully
60s Dance Party

That vox organ sound from the west side of San Antonio. I am getting close to doing a special on this sound. Stay tuned to Saturday night at midnight.

2007

Cosimo recorded plenty of vocal groups doing doo wop including the Pelicans
Stella Johnson
Trial of Stagger Lee

Another answer song this time to the classic Stagger Lee.
Randy Newman
Kingfish
Guilty

A new set with a more somber mood including the following pieces of poetry
Percy Mayfield
Life is Suicide and The Rivers Invitation
Poet of the Blues

I can never get over the haunting sound produced by Percy on these two frontal lob depression gems.
Merv Griffin
Screaming Meammies From Planet x

It is the music behind the novelty lyrics that fascinates me. Merv got some spectacular musicians together and they composed substantive instrumental music behind these goofy lyrics. Unlike most novelty songs, this holds up to repeated playing.
Ingrid Lucia
Rhinestone Cowboy

Sam is a bit delayed so we are off into a cowboy set.
Intruders
Cowboys to Girls

Sam arrives looking a bit tired but dressed as a dog sled musher complete with fur lined boots, coat, and hood. Sam told me his lead dog took after a cat which explains his delayed entry into the radio station. A very colorful guy this Sam. Stick around for his show and enjoy the audio version of a dresser made for television.
