I am proud to introduce the Guardian Angels of New Orleans into the WWOZ family, after they so boldly assisted me last week (14 of them met my request for added security in the Quarter!). A photo of my interview with Phil Garcia, Chapter Leader, will be added to my e-profile on the DJ page soon. Thank you for all the calls! To learn more about becoming a Guardian Angel, call Phil Garcia at (504) 270.8193; to DONATE to these amazing folks (who rely on individual donations, not grants), send a check/money order to: Guardian Angels New Orleans, 1000 Bourbon Street, Suite 232, New Orleans, LA 70116.
Thank you for all the calls about the Guardian Angels tonight, and also about the music. It's my great pleasure to help New Orleans in any way I possibly can. While I love the music, I also love helping the community in even more practical ways, so was so grateful for Phil to come up and talk with me and inform everyone about what they need. Again, the are VOLUNTEERS (like us DJs) who are unarmed and patrolling the streets in teams on foot and on bicycle. They are not paid for their time or their efforts. They do this to SERVE their communities. They were founded in NYC in the late '70s to deter violence on the subways when it became very prevalent. I will be producing a Street Talk Segment on the Guardian Angels in New Orleans within a couple of weeks. Stay tuned, and thank you for keeping WWOZ on the air, and for listening to my show, "Blues in the Night with Robyn Loda from the Witching Hour Till 3 a.m. Every Saturday Night to Sunday Morning."
Playlist Tracks
Dinah Shore "Blues in the Night" The Very Best of Dinah Shore RCA 2001 Recorded January 12, 1942; written by Harold Arlen ("Over the Rainbow," "That Old Black Magic," etc.). My El Popso up in Indiana used to make me all kinds of mix tapes, starting when I was about four (that first one was a red eight-track that included "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden" and "Killing Me Softly"). As a trumpeter growing up through the '30s and '40s, he loved swing and big-band arrangements. He included this very track on a cassette mix tape he sent me in college around 1991. Thanks, Louisiana Music Factory, for having this cut available the exact day I needed it to begin my show in May 2006. The HORNS are just so amazing here, and the tune itself is so sultry and burlesque. I love starting the show with this song each week. It connects me with my ancestors in gratitude. Ayibobo! |
Rocky Charles "Born for You" Born for You Orleans Records 1996 A big shout out to Carlo Ditta, who said he'd be up late tonight listening to my show and licking his romantic wounds, which I personally believe will herald lots of new creativity for his life. He's still dabbling in producerhood and doing live acoustic gigs in Covington. Before Mardi Gras, he and John Sinclair (www.radiofreeamsterdam.com) did a set together over there, but I was in a haze from getting my wisdom teeth pulled and couldn't get there. I'm grateful Carlo recorded Rocky Charles 12 years ago. Thanks, Carlo! |
Fats Domino "Love You Till the Day I Die" Alive & Kickin' Fats Domino Publishing 2006 Happy Birthday 80th to Fats, who turned 80 last week on Feb. 26. I wish him love and healing to feel comfortable enough to play live sets regularly. Anxiety is really disabling. I've seen so many sloppy performances and still loved them that I want him to know that he could do no wrong (short of yelling at the fans!) in my book. We love you, Antoine! |
