BLUES/R&B (sitting in for Missy Bowen who recently moved into this time slot). Tried to make this show chock full of great music during our 2007 Fall Fund Drive. Thanks to all who pledged support during my show!
Playlist Tracks
Duke Tumatoe & The Power Trio "The Traveler (under Live Wire)" Picks & Sticks (The Instrumental Album) Sweetfinger 1997 Duke is a lesser-known entity in New Orleans, but very familiar to me having lived in the Midwest most of my life (until my 1998 move to the Crescent City). Have seen him perform countless times and at one time owned one of Duke's signature guitars (with a lighted "DUKE" cutout in the body). |
Etta James "Somebody To Love" Let's Roll Private Music 2003 Hard to believe this melodic growl came from the same chords that gave us "At Last". |
Lucky Peterson "Double Dealin'" Double Dealin' Verve 2001 Double wonderful! This is my favorite of Lucky's albums. The "double" must be for vocals AND organ! |
Marva Wright "Bluesiana Mama" Bluesiana Mama AIM 1997 Our very own "Marvalous" Marva! |
Chris Thomas King "Come On In My Kitchen" The Roots 21st Century Blues 2003 This talented son of Tabby Thomas has a style all his own! |
Aaron Neville "Use Me" The Tattooed Heart A&M 1995 Funkier than you usually hear on an Aaron-only album (but it's a different story if you hear him as part of the Neville Brothers). Crank up this great take on the Bill Withers hit tune. |
Marcia Ball "The Right Tool For The Job" Let Me Play With Your Poodle Rounder 1997 "Long, tall..." Marcia Ball. She may not be from New Orleans, but she always makes us feel like she is. A local favorite as well as a world-renowned gem! |
Jon Cleary "All Right Now" Do Not Disturb FHQ 2007 From a little 4-track "tide-me-over" album until the next one. He calls these "hotel room ruffs" because they are rough cuts laid down on-the-fly. Pretty smooooth rough cuts, as far as I'm concerned. |
Andre Williams "You Got It And I Want It" Rib Tips and Pig Snoots: Rare And Unreleased Au-Go-Go Soul 1965-71 Soul-Tay-Shus 2000 Think girl in cage in go-go boots. Raw R&B at its best. |
Burnside Exploration "Let Me Love You Baby" Don't Touch That Dial WWOZ Fall Fund Drive CD Compilation #27 2007 One of 10 great tracks on our CD premium only to be had during this Fall 2007 fund drive! |
Shemekia Copeland "Who Stole My Radio" The Soul Truth Alligator 2005 A lyrical reminder that OZ is NOT corporate conglomerate radio! No one in a "C-suite" telling me what I must play! But, I do respond to your requests. |
Big Daddy O "Oreo Cookie Blues" That's How Strong My Love Is Rabadash 2001 A two-fer from a great performer and a great guy! |
Big Daddy O "I Don't Drink Much" That's How Strong My Love Is Rabadash 2001 Second of two songs that are both bluesy and yet lyrically playful. |
Ike Turner "Gimme Back My Wig" Risin' With The Blues Zoho 2006 Give it back or he'll beat you up! (Just kidding, Ike.) |
Tab Benoit "Plareen Man" The Sea Saint Sessions Telarc 2003 Cyril Neville wrote this and duets with Tab. In my top 10 favorites. |
John Lisi & Delta Funk "Can Ya' Dig It?" Can Ya' Dig It? Blue Goat 2004 Louisiana funk at its best! And these guys are huge supporters of "Voice of the Wetlands" (see www.voiceofthewetlands.com/vowfest) |
Jimmy Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, BB King, Buddy Guy, Art Neville, Dr. John "Six Strings Down" Tribute To Stevie Ray Vaughn Epic 1996 So much talent gathered to pay homage to SRV! Every track is great, but this one sums it up. |
Carl Weathersby and Larry McCray "Get Drunk And Pop The Trunk" Triple Fret JSP (GB) 2005 Weathersby, McCray, and Bernard Allison (who gets top billing) all mix it up with the guitars and vocal stylings (hence the "triple"), while Lucky Peterson guests on organ. |
Taj Mahal "Mercedes Benz" Blues Down Deep: Song Of Janis Joplin HOB 1997 |
Rockin' Jake "Blues For NYC (starts under Live Wire)" Full Time Work Zuluzu 2002 |
Tinsley Ellis "Double Eyed Whammy" Alligator Records 20th Anniversary Collection Alligator 1991 This great Tommy Ridgley tune is a great preview of we can expect from Tinsley at 2007 Crescent City Blues Festival! |
Thornetta Davis "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" Covered Live At The Music Menu Sweet Mama 2001 Introduced to this fine vocalist at 2006 Chicago Blues Festival. She hails from the Detroit area and this was recorded at a place then called "Music Menu" in Greektown (now the Buzz Bar). |
Sam Myers (with Mel Brown) "Money Is My Downfall" Coming From The Old School Electro-fi 2004 Glad I saw him at King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, AR three years ago (Oct 2004) because here's another great who has since left us (passed July 2006). Sam on vocals and harp. Mel guesting on guitar. |
Keb Mo "Soon As I Get Paid" Slow Down Sony 1998 I don't think Mr. Moore has yet to top this album. |
Susan Tedeschi "Voodoo Woman" Live From Austin TX New West 2004 It's "ta-DES-key" people. Or, Mrs. Derek Trucks, if you prefer. |
Drink Small "Ugly Woman Blues" Drink Small Southland Records 2002 Southland Records (still here in New Orleans in 2002) released these tunes recorded back in 1972. |
Jim Belushi & The Sacred Hearts "If The House Is Rockin'" 36-22-36 HOB/Polygram 1998 |
Big Joe Turner & Memphis Blues Caravan "Time To Go" Jackson On My Mind Mystic 1997 Not to be confused with the "boss of the blues" vocalist who had his heydey in the 50s with "Shake, Rattle and Roll" and "Flip, Flop, and Fly" and died in 1985, this BJT was a bassist with BB King before fronting his own Memphis Blues Caravan (and he doesn't sing). Clarence "Tex" Walker does the vocals for him on these tracks. |
