On any given night in New Orleans, you’re likely to find a place with live music and free food. Sometimes it’s red beans and trad jazz, other times it’s BBQ and the blues. On this week’s program, it’s curry and the Pocket brass of Magnetic Ear, an ensemble headed by Martin Krusche, a sax player from Munich who now makes his home in the 9th ward of New Orleans.
On this week’s program, four piano players – Ellis Marsalis, Dr. John, Joe Krown, and Bob Andrews – take their turn on the 88s. We also stopped by the Historic New Orleans Collection for an exhibit, “Seeking the Unknown”, a exhibit that “presents objects that provide a broad historical background for the study of Louisiana’s natural history—from taxidermied animals, specimens in jars, and pressed plants to lavishly illustrated folios.”
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival begins on April 26th and closes on May 5th aka Cinco de Mayo, but instead of packing up and going home, the celebration continues! The Iguanas are Cinco de Mayo mainstay, so this week’s program features a full hour of the band along with a visit to the Rum House for some eclectic tacos. We also preview Bayou Boogaloo, another festival in May with music, food, and art that takes place on Bayou St. John.
