Gabriel Alegria
World-renowned jazz trumpeter and composer Gabriel Alegria performs live in the studio with his Afro-Peruvian Sextet on Friday, February 27 at 5 p.m.
One of the most influential figures on the current jazz scene in Perú, Gabriel Alegria was born into an artistic family in Lima in 1970. Alegria’s grandfather Ciro was Peru’s most famous novelist and his father Alonso is Perú’s most acclaimed playwright.
Alegria is currently touring the U.S. in support of his popular new release Nuevo Mundo, on Saponegro Records. During the course of a career that has spanned the globe, Alegria has appeared in concert and/or on recordings with Maria Schneider, Placido Domingo, Kenny Werner, Ingrid Jensen, Tierney Sutton, Natalie Cole, The Peruvian National Symphony, Bill Watrous, John Thomas, Russ Ferrante and Alex Acuña.
Most recently Gabriel completed the groundbreaking “Tour Peru,” a new model in touring that included 40 fans who accompanied the Afro-Peruvian Sextet throughout Peru.
The Afro-Peruvian Sextet includes saxophonist Laurandrea Leguía, acoustic guitarist Yuri Juárez, bassist Ramón De Bruyn, drummer Hugo Alcázar, and master percussionist Freddy “Huevito” Lobatón, who plays the traditional Afro-Peruvian instruments cajón (box drum) and quijada (jaw bone), and adds spectacular passages of zapateo dancing to each performance.

On Friday, February 6, at 9:30 p.m., WWOZ will present blue-eyed soul singer/guitarist Eric Lindell broadcast live from Mid-City Lanes Rock 'n' Bowl. His roots-rock band includes Derek Huston and Jimmy Carpenter (saxes), Scott Jackson (bass), Chris Davis (drums), and Marc Adams (keys). Don't miss this powerhouse of original soulful mix of funk, blues, rock, and swamp pop.

On Tuesday, February 3 at 10 p.m., WWOZ will broadcast a performance by jazz pianist Jesse McBride and The Next Generation live from Snug Harbor. Tune in to 90.7 FM or listen online at WWOZ.org to catch this evening of compositions dedicated to the second 50 years of New Orleans jazz.

Be sure to tune in to the Wednesday afternoon blues and R&B show, Sittin' at the Crossroads with Big D, to hear a live in-studio performance by J.J. Grey, who performs with his band Mofro at the House of Blues that night in support of their latest release, Orange Blossoms.

BeauSoleil
Grammy winners and 10-time nominees BeauSoleil perform live in the WWOZ studio, in celebration of their Jan. 20 release on Yep Roc Records, Alligator Purse. The band is in town for their world premiere CD release party at the The Maple Leaf on Friday, and they play at the Blue Moon Saloon in Lafayette on Saturday, January 24.
For the upcoming 51st annual Grammy Awards, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet received a nomination in the Zydeco/Cajun category for their Munck Music CD, Live at the 2008 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Michael Doucet received a nomination in the same category for the Smithsonian Folkways release, From Now On.
Hailing from Lafayette, Louisiana, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet take the rich Cajun traditions of Louisiana and artfully blend elements of zydeco, New Orleans jazz, Tex-Mex, country, blues and more into a satisfying musical recipe.
BeauSoleil features Michael Doucet on violin, guitar, accordion, mandolin, and vocals; David Doucet on guitar and vocals; Jimmy Breaux on accordion; percussionist Billy Ware; drummer Tommy Alesi; and Mitch Reed on fiddle and bass.
