If you didn't catch him at Piano Night 2011, you can listen to legendary organ player, Dr. Lonnie Smith, along with drummer Herlin Riley, live over the air or online from the Contemporary Arts Center on Saturday, August 27, 7:30 10:30 PM. The Jazz Journey concert series is a regular event hosted by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, bringing in jazz luminaries to play with New Orleans musicians.
WWOZ looks forward as we commemorate the sixth anniversary of Katrina. We've compiled Katrina-related community events, along with a feature report by our community partner The Lens and audio documentaries by show host George Ingmire that pay homage to New Orleans cultural figures and icons that passed in the aftermath of Katrina.
WWOZ has partnered with The Lens, an investigative news source for the Greater New Orleans region, to bring you Insight New Orleans. Insight New Orleans is a collaborative project that solicits the expertise of everyday citizens on issues near and dear to our hearts. You have something to say about second line culture? On music education? The struggle of music venues post-Katrina? On charter schools? Shout out about it!
It's that time of year again, when even though it may feel like it's 108 degrees outside, social aid and pleasure clubs take to the streets to celebrate our neighborhoods. This season begins with The Valley of the Silent Men parading on August 28. Keep up to date with DJ Action Jackson's interviews, parade route sheets and other events surrounding the social aid and pleasure club community.
Maryse Dejean is the volunteer coordinator for WWOZ and current host of Wednesday afternoons' "Jazz from the French Market" from 4-7PM. A native of Haiti, Maryse moved to New Orleans in the early 1980s and began her career at WWOZ in 1991. She has enriched and preserved the musical heritage of the city ever since as a WWOZ volunteer, staff member, and as host of several programs, including Sunday nights' "What's New," "The Kitchen Sink" of new releases.
WWOZ's Fall Membership Drive is right around the corner, and we need your help to make it a success! We are looking for phone bank volunteers to help us sign up new and renewing members at the studio. The drive starts on Tuesday, September 27 and runs through Thursday, October 6. With lots of food, fun and live music, the phone bank is the place to be during the pledge drive!

Impress your friends with a fancy dessert from one of our favorite soul food restaurants in New Orleans, Dooky Chase. Dooky Chase may be better known for its homestyle fried chicken and lunchtime buffets, but this is something worth whipping up just for the "oohs" and "ahhs." If you like the recipe, then visit Louisiana Cookin' magazine. Subscribe with the promotion code wwoz2011, and they'll donate $5 to WWOZ.
