After successful shows with Jon Cleary, John Boutte and Donald Harrison, New Orleans pianist Davell Crawford will be bringing his electrifying piano style and stage energy to the Old U.S. Mint, Friday, March 21st at 7 p.m. The fundraiser for the Friends of the Cabildo is the fourth of five concerts at the Old U.S. Mint.
Grandson of the legendary James “Sugarboy” Crawford, pioneer of New Orleans R&B in the 1950s, Crawford started playing piano at age seven and first toured Europe in his early teens. In 1998 he won the Big Easy Music Award for Best Gospel Artist, which launched his career to new levels and gained him an even stronger following of fans. A true roots musician, Crawford’s live performances include a dusting of R&B, soul, gospel, funk and jazz tunes all performed with electrifying energy that can captivate any crowd. An exhilarating performance by Crawford will kick off the spring music series at the Mint.
The New Orleans/Louisiana premiere of "Zanna, Don't! (A Musical Fairy Tale)" will open at The Shadowbox Theatre, located at 2400 St. Claude Avenue-New Orleans, LA-70117, on March 14 and run March 15, 16, 20, 21, 22, 23, 27, 28, 29, and 30. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night performances will begin at 8pm and Sunday matinee performances will begin at 2pm.
"Zanna, Don't" is a critically-acclaimed, award-winning 2003 off-Broadway musical written by Tim Acito with additional lyrics and material by Alexander Dinelaris. The show is set in a parallel magical universe where homosexuality is the norm and heterosexuality is taboo. Set in a mid-western all-American type town, the action takes place at heterophobic Heartsville High. Zanna, the school matchmaker (think Dolly Levi with more flair), brings together happy same-sex couples until the football team's handsome quarterback and the lovely captain of the Girls' Intramural Mechanical Bull-Riding Team begin to discover their feelings for each other.
In addition to receiving several 2003 Drama Desk and Outer Critic Circle award nominations, the original production of "Zanna, Don't" won the Lucille Lortel award for best choreography as well as the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding New York Theater Production and was voted Favorite Off-Broadway Musical in the Broadway.com Audience Awards.
Following the sold out run of the Big Easy Award nominated "Evil Dead the Musical", "Zanna Don't" will be quite a change of pace; going from the world of blood, dismemberment, and evil Candarian demons to a celebration of love and diversity! "See 'Em On Stage: A Production Company" is proud to continue its mission of bringing musicals to the New Orleans theater community that are brand new to local audiences.
"Zanna, Don't!" is produced and directed by Christopher Bentivegna. Choreography and assistant direction is provided by Lindsey Romig. Natalie True is the music director (leading a live rock band).
Ariel Schwab will serve as production manager. Caroline St. Amant is the stage manager and Michelle deMontluzin is the production designer. Elizabeth Corley will contribute to special effects.
