John Calvin Presbyterian Church will present their annual Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 15 at 10:30 a.m. In commemoration of Benjamin Britten's 100th birthday, they will present his "A Ceremony of Carols" (written in 1942) with soloists, chorus and the original harp accompaniment. They will also present Richard Wagner's "O Morning Star" to celebrate his 200th birthday. This is a rendering of "O Evening Star" from "Tannhauser" to the text by Philipp Nicolai for tenor, harp, French horn and chorus. A brass quintet will play selections from Arcangelo Corelli's "Christmas Concerto" as arranged by William R. Memmott who will be conducting the concert. Jan Cox will also be featured at the harpsichord. The women of the church will be providing a Christmas Luncheon following the concert in Fellowship Hall. All are cordially invited.
The Nutcracker Suite performances will take place on Sunday, December 15, at 3 PM and 6 PM at Dixon Hall, Tulane University. This particular Nutcracker production is unique because it brings the community’s youth and senior citizens together for a family-centered holiday production. The participants are students of the NORDC/NOBA Center for Dance’s community dance programs.
The New Orleans Concert Band (NOCB) will be performing their annual holiday concert on Sunday, December 15 at the UNO Performing Arts Center's Recital Hall. The free concert, which will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank, begins at 4:00 p.m. and is a family-friendly event open to the public. Guests are encouraged to bring a non-perishable canned good with them to the performance to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans.
The NOCB will perform a variety of holiday classics to celebrate the season. Some highlights include Leroy Anderson’s “A Christmas Festival” and "Sleigh Ride."
Since 1975, the NOCB has been comprised of more than 60 volunteer musicians from the New Orleans area, with members from a variety of backgrounds who share a love of music. The New Orleans Concert Band receives its support through its membership dues, donations from individual supporters and through gifts of instruments and grants from various local organizations.
