The 8th Annual Katrina Artistically Revisited special event is held every anniversary eve of Katrina on August 28th, at The Theatres at Canal Place in downtown New Orleans. This special yearly event, produced by husband-wife team, Patty Lee and Armand St. Martin, is designed as a reflective way to revisit Katrina, through the eyes and resilience of the artist.
Advocate New Orleans' reporter, Margaret Quilter, further captures the essence of this event in her recent feature article in the Beaucoup Entertainment, Arts Section, by writing, "One evening a year, as the clock ticks toward midnight, New Orleans musicians, artists, photographers, authors and film directors come together for an annual grassroots commemorative event, to share with the public their artistic response to Hurricane Katrina."
Participants in the 2013 "everything Katrina" program tonight include an Octavia Books exhibit in the Lobby, with folks mingling and sharing Katrina stories and photos such as author Dean Shapiro, as well as a Photo Exhibit by Mark Sindler (Staff Photographer for the Louisiana State Museum), while enjoying purchased wine/food from Gusto Lobby restaurant, as well as a book-signing by John E. Wade II (How to Achieve Heaven on Earth) - - all starting at 8:30 pm. A drawing for gift bags are added this year by Theodent. Sponsors include George Solomon, The Theatres at Canal Place, Theodent, Vivian and Richard Cahn, Arman Sadeghpour, World 10, Octavia Books, and Patty Lee Records.
In the Theatre at 10 pm, the multi-media event continues with live music performances by Armand St. Martin (Orleans Lullaby, Waitin' For My Trailer, Creole Good-By), and Steve Allen (Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans, Katrina). A presentation by John E. Wade II is scheduled as well as film shorts, trailers, and slide shows: by Dennis Couvillion (Stillness. . . the aftermath of Katrina), Matt Faust (Home), Steven Scaffidi with Rockey Vaccarella (Forgotten on the Bayou), Joanna Rosenthal/Ariya Martin (New Orleans Kids Camera Project), Richard Cahn (Bayou St. John), and more. Robert Green, Sr. will also speak, and other artists contributing with on-screen photos include Donn Young, Mark Sindler and Patty Lee. Armand St. Martin is the emcee each year.
