In response to a dearth of modern jazz offerings in the local live music scene, WWOZ and Prime Example present a newly revived concert series, one that allows patrons to enjoy and "swing" to living legends of modern New Orleans jazz in an intimate, neighborhood lounge setting.
"Thursday Night Swingin'," hosted by Soul Sister
Where: The Prime Example Jazz Club, 1909 North Broad St.
When: Every Thursday night, two shows at 7:00 and 9:00 p.m.
Admission is $15. (WWOZ members receive special discounted $10 admission with their membership card.)
The 8 p.m. set will include Cloud Trio (2010), a work of transfixing beauty by Kaija Saariaho, and Steve Reich’s seminal work for string quartet and sampled soundtrack, Different Trains, which will take you on two very different journeys: America – Before the War, and Europe – During the War.
The 10 p.m. set will feature one of the ultimate pieces of night music, J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations, supposedly written to help an insomniac Count pass his sleepless nights. Comprising thirty variations spun on the the bass-line of a sublime aria, the Goldberg Variations is a captivating experiment in contrapuntal origami. You might even think of this work as northern Europe’s One Thousand and One Nights. Without question, this is a tale you do not want to miss!
Featuring Donald Harrison, Jr. & The Congo Square Nation, The Hot 8 Brass Band, Bonerama, Stooges Brass Band, The Revivalists, The N.O. Suspects, and More!
