Over the past two days both headliner acts at the Jazz Tent (Stephon Harris and The Mingus Big Band) were frustrated by the level of noise "bleeding" over from the Acura Stage. Mr. Harris attempted to play a ballad that he had written in honor of his son, however given the intensity of the thumping bass from the Acura stage he gave up his attempt in clear disgust. The next day, Craig Handy from the Mingus Big Band mocked the booming noise coming from the Acura stage (generated by Arcade Fire) by imitating a comedic dance as he began to initiate his solo.
The level of noise coming from that stage was frustrating for both musicians as well as the audience. It's time to move the OZ Jazz Tent to a location more suitable of its standing. Its previous location (at the current Gospel site) worked well. I don't understand the reason for the relocation to the its current site. The true fans of jazz should voice their opinions re: the second class role the music has taken in this event.
The organizers of the Jazz Fest have chosen to promote the work of some "famous for a minute" rock band (Arcade Fire) celebrating its 15 minutes of fame over the work of one of America's greatest composers (Charles Mingus) that has been providing social commentary for 60-70 years. In 5-10 years, one will be hard pressed to remember that Arcade Fire even existed.
Welcome to the New Orleans Noise and Heritage Fest!!
