CASA New Orleans Orientation

CASA New Orleans (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is an agency that advocates on behalf of children (birth to 18+) who have been judged victims of abuse and/or neglect. A CASA volunteer offers a child trust and advocacy during complex legal proceedings. Interacting and explaining to the child what is going on, the CASA may be the only stable and continuous presence in the child’s life.

"Musically Speaking:" free screening of 'Calle 54'

From the director of Academy Award-winning Belle Epoch (Best Foreign Language Film, 1993) comes this documentary featuring barefoot Brazilian pianist Eliane Elias, Argentinean tenor sax great Gato Barbieri, Paquito D'Rivera, Chucho Valdés, Cachao, and many more - not to mention the last on-screen appearances by the late composer-arranger Chico O'Farrill and the legendary timbales master and "godfather of Latin music" Tito Puente (pictured).

ArtSpeak--Behind the Mask: Artists and Curators discuss Brilliant Disguise: Masks and Other Transformations

The Contemporary Arts Center presents a panel discussion amongst experts in different areas of masking. New Orleans Museum of Art Curator William Fagaly will discuss the significance of masking in various African cultures. LSM Curator Wayne Phillips will discuss the meaning of masking during New Orleans Mardi Gras, and Mardi Gras Indian Chief Victor Harris will discuss his own process of masking as Chief of the Mandingo Warriors and the Spirit of Fi Yi Yi.

The CAC will host special gallery hours from 5pm to 7pm on Tuesday, May 21 before the ArtSpeak event.

The Tulane Family Business Center will host a workshop on Thursday, May 23, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., in the Lavin Bernick Center for University Life’s Kendall Cram Lecture Hall on Tulane University’s uptown campus.

The program will feature Sherif A. Ebrahim, president & CEO of the Strategic Management Group and Managing Partner of SMG Capital. The Strategic Management Group provides services in the area corporate strategy, governance and multi-organizational integration.

Mr. Ebrahim will present Uncovering Delicate Matters That Can Break A Successful Family Business to help participants understand critical factors that affect all businesses, factors that are unique to family businesses, how to strike a balance, and which factors need to be leveraged in order to develop and implement a sustainable growth strategy and understand why it matters.

THE 19 FUND
 
"The mission of The 19 Fund is to help victims of violent crime heal physically, financially and emotionally."
 
PRIMARY CRITERIA FOR 19 FUND SUPPORT:
Crime-related expenses incurred by a victim or victim-survivor of violent crime in the Greater New Orleans Area.
Qualifying expenses shall be reimbursed, based on formal needs assessments and the individual circumstances of each victim. In addition, the 19 Fund shall provide advocacy and assistance in seeking additional financial and logistical assistance on behalf of victims and victim families. All assessments and case management shall take place on the basis of strict confidentiality.
 
FUND ACCOUNTABILITY
The 19 Fund shall provide a quarterly report on victim services rendered, to be publicly available and provided directly to all supporters of the Fund. Records shall be independently audited annually.

Musicollaborative Fam Jams

On Saturday, May 25th, Musicollaborative will present a Parent-Child FamJam at 10am for parents and their children 18mos-age 3, as well as a Multi-Age FamJam at 11:30 for siblings 18mos-6 years and their caregivers. Registration is now open for these affordable sessions hosted by the Annette West Music Studio near Tipitina's uptown. The FamJams will highlight the musical styles of New Orleans and south Louisiana, while offering opportunities to explore hand drums, movement and singing. The Great Mid City Memorial Day Crawfish Boil Off for the Bar Man's Fund

May 27, 2013, Memorial Day, Quarter Rat Monthly (QRM) is hosting a crawfish boil competition at Bayou Beer Garden in the Mid City neighborhood of New Orleans. The proceeds from the event will be directed to The Barman’s Fund, a group of local bartenders who pool tips to support the community. This month’s charities are STAIR, a group working one on one with students to assist them with reading skills, and Crescent City Lights Youth Theatre, to sponsor 4 children attending the summer program. There will be a $10 cover charge for the event and the QRM Boil Champion will be decided by tips collected at each table. At least 4 local businesses will be boiling.
