Sun, Nov 23, 2014

Snake Oil is proud to bring you the Unholy Roller Revival, a burlesque variety show with the fire and brimstone of an old time Pentecostal tent revival, but with no pesky damnation & judgment. If you grew up religious, like to laugh when Jimmy Swaggart sleeps with hookers, or if you love music and burlesque, then this is the show for you! The Unholy Roller Revival takes you on a journey to a bygone era when dancing ladies, musicians, and sideshows traveled with religious revivals to towns far and wide, to entertain and save the public, while relieving them of a few dollars. This event pays homage to that era by rolling all of the music, dancing, sideshow, and gospel into one hilarious show that lampoons religion & is guaranteed to have you in the aisles, jumping up & down, and screaming, "HALLELUJAH"! 4th Annual NOLA Polar Express benefiting CASA New Orleans

DATE
Sat, Dec 6, 2014
8:00pm - 1:00am

December 6th at Publiq House will mark the 4th annual NOLA Polar Express benefiting the children at CASA New Orleans and CASA SoLA (the Lafayette chapter). Our goal is to raise toys and funds for the kids at CASA during the holiday season. These children are largely forgotten at this time of year, and it’s our goal to make sure that every child has a toy to open in our local chapters. We are proud to say that 100% of the proceeds go towards funding toys for the children. Last year, the event raised $2,831 and 2 massive bags of toys making the NOLA Polar Express the 2nd largest donor in Louisiana. We plan to up our goal this year to $3,500 and double the toys collected. The bill consists of The Breton Sound, The Wooden Wings, Social Set and Paper Bison on December 6th at the Freret Street Publiq House. The doors are at 8 PM and the cover is either $10 or $5 with a toy donation.

The Role of Privateers in Independence Movements in the Americas

DATE
Thu, Dec 11, 2014
TIME
6:00pm - 8:00pm

Though the War of 1812 ended with a decisive American victory at the Battle of New Orleans, the U. S. Navy was relatively small during the early nineteenth century. As a result, privateering—the practice of commissioning private ships for use in war—became increasingly common during the war and some veterans continued the practice in Latin America as the Wars for Independence began to spread south.

Join Robert Freeland as he highlights the role of privateers in several independence movements in the Americas. Thais Solano will conclude with how New Orleans-born privateer Renato Beluche went from a cannoneer in the Battle of New Orleans under Andrew Jackson to admiral in the navy of Gran Colombia under Simon Bolivar.
