1970 Jazzfest Movie and Lecture

The Louisiana State Museum’s collection of seven different 16mm film reels from the first Jazz Fest will be shown at the Old U.S. Mint 3rd Floor Performance Space Thursday April 17th at 6:00 p.m & 7:30 p.m. Dr. Charles Chamberlain, will moderate the event as well as the Band-In-A-Pocket Jazz Trio will be performing in sections that do not have sound. Don Perry, one of the founders of the New Orleans Jazz Club and a former WDSU cameraman filmed the first festival in 1970 and donated the reels in 1978 to the Louisiana State Museum (LSM). The LSM digitized the films in 2012 allowing them to be preserved for generations of Jazz Fest and music fans. The seven separate films show artists such as Duke Ellington, Pete Fountain, Danny Barker and Mahalia Jackson.

Jazz at the Rat presents "Women in Jazz" featuring Johnaye Kendrick

Jazz at the Rat is a concert series at Tulane University, featuring special guests performing alongside student musicians from Tulane's Jazz Studies program. Free and open to the public, and hosted by Jesse McBride.

A San Diego native and graduate of the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, vocalist Johnaye Kendrick has worked with many contemporary jazz legends, including Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Terence Blanchard, Danilo Perez, Christian McBride, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ellis Marsalis, and Brian Blade. Kendrick was also featured on the Grammy-winning 2009 album by Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, 'Book 1.' When not touring with her own group, she serves as assistant professor of jazz voice at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.

Reading will be Joseph Boyden, the 2014 winner of Canada Reads for his novel, The Orenda. Beth Ann Fennelly and Tom Franklin, reading from their new novel, The Tilted World; Mr. Franklin is the winner of the Gold Dagger award. Author of Red Moon, author Benjamin Percy, and New York Times best-selling author John Barry will read. Mr. Barry served on the New Orleans levee board that filed suit against 97 oil, gas and pipeline companies for damage to the flood protection system. The City of Mandeville and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival Foundation present the History of Jazz in Mandeville. Explore the impact of jazz in Mandeville with a lecture performance by Dr. Michael White. Dr. White has written and published several essays on New Orleans’ musical traditions in scholarly journals, magazines, and books, including the Journal of American History, Cultural Vistas, The Jazz Archivist, Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance, and Triumph of the Soul. He has also presented over one hundred lecture performance programs on the history and meaning of New Orleans Jazz and serves as consultant for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

The lecture performance will include the Jazz connection between New Orleans and Mandeville, the role of Social/Benevolent clubs, as well as sense of community fostered by the genre of music. It is free to the public. Join us on Saturday, April 19, 5:00 p.m at The Dew Drop Jazz & Social Hall.

Larry Hartzog's Mellow Brew Fest

Larry Hartzog, legendary Northshore homebrewer and jazz enthusiast. One of the founding members of the Mystic Krewe of Brew homebrew club. He had an eclectic taste in music and never missed a day of Jazzfest. You could always find him dancing by the Fais Do Do stage, or in the Jazz Tent. Anyone who brewed with him knew he believed that the first thing you do, before you brew , is turn the radio on. He was a long time member of WWOZ and and loved all the music! He enjoyed Jazz from the Park , especially when Mike Gourrier was DJ., The World Journey, and Peggy Sue on Sat night.

On Monday, May 12, five local, professional and university theatre producers, Cripple Creek Theatre Co., Dillard University Theatre, NEW NOISE, Pamela Davis-Noland, and Skin Horse Theater, will perform plays written by students from St. Mary’s Academy, Success Preparatory Academy, and The International School of Louisiana. The performance is a celebration of the students’ work and a highly entertaining event for any theatre-goer. As one would expect, when a professional team of artists stages a 10-year-old’s words, the results are often hilarious and inspiring.

Emergency Circus Kickoff Carnival

On Sunday, May 25th from 3pm to 9pm the Emergency Circus, a 501(c)3 non profit affiliate of Patch Adams' Gesundheit Institute, will transform the Old Firehouse (720 Mandeville Street) into an all ages Kickoff Carnival featuring music, workshops, food, games, prizes, ponies, and world renowned circus acts to raise funds for the their "Tour to the Rescue" this spring which will crisscross the country bringing inspirational circus shows and workshops to children's wards, senior centers, homeless shelters, prisons, and other undercircussed facilities.

he Kickoff Carnival will feature local talent from Cirque du Gras, Cirque D'Licious, the G-String Orchestra, as well as musicians and circus artists from across the country including America's Got Talent finalist Special Head, the levitating magician with over 20,000,000 Youtube hits.

Admission to the carnival is by donation ($5-20)

The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) will begin an exciting new year with the opening of the exhibition 30 Americans  on February 8, 2014. The grand touring exhibition has received much national acclaim and will occupy all three floors of the CAC’s gallery space until June 15, 2014.  30 Americans is organized and drawn from the Rubell Family Collection in Miami and includes more than 70 works by 31 emerging and established African American artists working within a variety of mediums. The CAC’s presentation of 30 Americans  will include a special selection of 14 works never before included in this touring exhibition. This provocative exhibition focuses on issues of racial, sexual, and historical identity in contemporary culture while exploring the powerful influence of artistic legacy and community across generations.

 

Participating Artists Include: Nina Chanel Abney, Barkley L. Hendricks, Shinique Smith, John Bankston, Rashid Johnson, Jeff Sonhouse, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Glenn Ligon, Henry Taylor, Mark Bradford, Kalup Linzy, Hank Willis Thomas, Iona Rozeal Brown, Kerry James Marshall, Mickalene Thomas, Nick Cave, Rodney McMillian, Kara Walker, Robert Colescott, Wangechi Mutu, Carrie Mae Weems, Noah Davis, William Pope.L, Kehinde Wiley, Leonardo Drew             Gary Simmons, Purvis Young, Renée Green, Xaviera Simmons, David Hammons and Lorna Simpson.          

 

ABOUT THE RUBELL COLLECTION

The Rubell Family Collection (RFC) was established in 1964 in New York City shortly after its founders Donald and Mera Rubell were married. It is now one of the world’s largest, privately owned contemporary art collections. In Miami, Florida since 1993, the collection is constantly expanding and features such well-known artists as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker and Andy Warhol. In addition to displaying internationally established artists, the RFC actively acquires, exhibits and champions emerging artists working at the forefront of contemporary art.

Mr. Legs is a fundraising event involving male contestants who show a little leg for charity. As a parody of a beauty pageant, Mr. Legs contestants don costumes and perform on stage for a few minutes to entertain the crowd during the event. Contestants solicit funds before and during the event. The money raised will be used for the Bridge House / Grace House substance abuse treatment program.
