Labor Day is a chance to reflect on the spirit of America's workforce and acknowledge the importance that each worker has to the well being of this nation. For that reason, the second annual Labor Day screening program is titled Heroes. From revolutionaries like Grace Lee Boggs to immigrant workers like Carmen and Lourdes, the program presents three documentaries that portray a diverse array of working heroes and invites the public to screen their own Labor Day heroes for the fifth installment of Open Screen, New Orleans.

Want to make a difference in a child’s life? Become a CASA New Orleans Advocate! CASA New Orleans fights for the rights of abused and neglected children. CASA volunteers advocate on behalf of children (birth to 18+) in foster care. A CASA volunteer offers a child trust and advocacy during complex legal proceedings. Interacting and explaining to the child what is going on, the CASA may be the only stable and continuous presence in the child’s life.

A Nola Love Story

Carr has written about education for the last twelve years, reporting on the battle over vouchers and charter schools in urban districts. Her work has been honored with numerous national awards and fellowships, most recently a Spencer Education Journalism Fellowship at Columbia University. She has also contributed to the New York Times, the Hechiniger Report, the Times-Picayune, Time.com, and several other news outlets.

A night of music, food, and celebration to benefit the women and children of Hagar's House

On Thursday, October 2, Amanda Shaw, Charmaine Neville, and other talented women musicians of New Orleans will be performing to support and celebrate the women and children of Hagar’s House.

Women Performing for Women will take place at Café Istanbul at 2372 St. Claude Avenue. Tickets are $40 (or $75 for a couple) and include all food and music. Doors open at 6:30pm for pre-music, silent auction bidding and for food by The Ruby Slipper and other generous and decadent local restaurants. Concert begins at 7pm and ends at 10pm.

Friends of the Cabildo is proud to announce a symposium in conjunction with the Bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans Weekend (Saturday, January 10th). Held at the Old U.S. Mint 3rd Floor Performance Space, Dr. Alan Taylor, 2014 and 1996 Pulitzer Prize Winner in History and University of Virgina Thomas Jefferson Foundation Professor of History, will present on the War of 1812 and his newest book The Internal Enemy: Slavery and the War in Virginia, 1772-1832.

A panel discussion will take place with Dr. Lawrence Powell and Dr. Clarence Mohr, moderated by Dr. Charles Chamberlain. Other lecturers include Dr. Lo Faber, recent Princeton University graduate and visiting Loyola University-New Orleans Visiting Professor, United States Military Academy – The History of Warfare Historian Dr. Joseph Stoltz and more to be announced.
