Kidd Jordan and Hamiet Bluiett Saxophone Improvisation at Music at the Mint

DATE
Thu, Apr 30, 2015
TIME
9:00pm - 10:30pm

Don't miss this rare opportunity to experience the power of free improvisation presented by two legends of the art form; Sir Edward "Kidd" Jordan and Hamiet Bluiett on Thursday, April 30. The two kings of improvisers appropriately team up on International Jazz Day for a night to be remembered at the Old U.S. Mint, 400 Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans for a 9:00 PM show at the Music at the Mint series.

This special presentation is hosted by the New Orleans Arts and Cultural Host Committee, presenters of the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp. The Jazz Camp Alumni and Faculty band will open the show.

Admission is $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
PURCHASE TICKETS HERE

Kidd Jordan is acclaimed internationally as one of the true master improvisers still performing today. Indie Jazz aptly describes Kidd Jordan as a "genteel man" who is probably the single most under-documented jazz musician of his generation, a fact that is even more remarkable when you consider that he is also one of the busiest musicians in the world. Jordan was recognized as a jazz maverick as far back in the 1940s intent on exploring jazz rooted music's outer reaches. In recognition of his great musical achievements, knighthood was bestowed on him by the Republic of France where he holds the title Chevalier des Artes et Lettres.

Hamiet Bluiett was born in Lovejoy, Illinois just north of East St. Louis. He moved to New York in 1969 where he was a member of The Charles Mingus Quintet and the Sam Rivers large ensemble. Hamiet was a founding member of The World Saxophone Quartet, perhaps the most celebrated saxophone ensemble in the history of jazz.

Ogden After Hours presents Andre Bohren

DATE
Thu, May 14, 2015
TIME
6:00pm - 8:00pm

Andre Bohren is a lifelong musician. From early obsessions with Peruvian flutes and ‘50’s Rock ‘n Roll to his discovery of classical piano and syncopated funk, Bohren is constantly broadening his musical horizons. At the age of 16, he performed Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra as the featured piano soloist and was soon touring the U.S. and Europe with his father, American roots musician Spencer Bohren. After a decade of near complete focus on piano, which included five years of study under Dr. Janet Ahlquist and two years under Dr. John Murphy at Loyola University in New Orleans, Andre Bohren founded the eclectic funk-rock band Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes (JSDN), this time manning the drum chair.

Ogden After Hours presents Susan Cowsill

DATE
Fri, May 15, 2015
TIME
6:00pm - 8:00pm

Susan Cowsill first entered the pop-culture scene at the age of eight as the youngest member of the ’60s musical family the Cowsills, who graced the AM airwaves with such enduring pop hits as “Hair” and “The Rain, the Park and Other Things,” and who were the real-life inspiration for TV’s famed Partridge Family.
In adulthood, Susan Cowsill has emerged as a singer-songwriter of singular emotional insight and musical resonance, first as a key member of beloved alt-roots-pop supergroup the Continental Drifters and more recently on her widely acclaimed second solo album Lighthouse. Lighthouse’s soulful, personally-charged songcraft reflects the artist’s experiences during a wrenching period which saw Cowsill dealing with the deaths of her brothers Billy and Barry, and the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, which claimed most of her and her family’s material possessions and temporarily displaced them from Susan’s adopted hometown of New Orleans.

Ogden After Hours presents Mississippi Rail Company

DATE
Thu, May 28, 2015
TIME
6:00pm - 8:00pm

The aim of Mississippi Rail Company is moving music forward via a vehicle of the past. Their music is an experiment in irony, embracing New Orleans roots music, rock 'n roll, folk, and blues traditions while refusing to fall subject to any of their claims. Their music breaks wholly new ground, rejecting any pull toward a simple re-hash of past musical genres. There is nothing tired, tried, or weary about their sound as it re-thinks (and re-shapes) a century of American musical traditions. In short, it manages to sound as if it could have been produced in 1920, even as its content and structure are decades ahead of its time.
