River Lore: A Conversation with Doc Hawley and Ben Sandmel

DATE
Thu, May 28, 2015
TIME
6:00pm - 8:00pm

Join River Captain Clarke C. "Doc" Hawley and music writer Ben Sandmel as they discuss their careers and adventures working on the Mississippi River and its tributaries in an event sponsored by Louisiana Cultural Vistas magazine. Doc Hawley has served as Mate, Pilot and Captain of the Delta Queen, Belle of Louisville, President, Natchez, and American Queen — all paddlewheel steamboats. He is thought to have seen more of the inland rivers than any living steamboatman. Between 1973 and 1981, Ben Sandmel worked as a deckhand on the Ohio/ Mississippi river system, on the steamboat Delta Queen, and on towboats in West Virginia. Sandmel’s books include Ernie K-Doe: The R&B Emperor of New Orleans. He also produced the Hackberry Ramblers’ Grammy-nominated album Deep Water, and played drums with that venerable Cajun band for 18 years.

Ogden After Hours presents Mississippi Rail Company

DATE
Thu, May 28, 2015
TIME
6:00pm - 8:00pm

The aim of Mississippi Rail Company is moving music forward via a vehicle of the past. Their music is an experiment in irony, embracing New Orleans roots music, rock 'n roll, folk, and blues traditions while refusing to fall subject to any of their claims. Their music breaks wholly new ground, rejecting any pull toward a simple re-hash of past musical genres. There is nothing tired, tried, or weary about their sound as it re-thinks (and re-shapes) a century of American musical traditions. In short, it manages to sound as if it could have been produced in 1920, even as its content and structure are decades ahead of its time.

CASA New Orleans (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is an agency that advocates on behalf of children (birth to 18+) who have been judged victims of abuse and/or neglect. A CASA volunteer offers a child trust and advocacy during complex legal proceedings. Interacting and explaining to the child what is going on, the CASA may be the only stable and continuous presence in the child’s life.

We are especially in need of more Spanish speaking volunteers and male volunteers but we welcome all volunteers!
