The New Orleans literary community has held a Banned Books week event for over 20 years (except for 2005), and we are pleased to announce the 2014 event will be taking place on Monday evening, September 22, 2014, starting at 6:00 p.m. This event is FREE and open to the public.

Co-sponsored by the New Orleans Public Library, the Jefferson Parish Public Library, the ACLU of Louisiana, and the New Orleans Gulf South Booksellers Association, the evening promises to inform and entertain attendees with a stellar roster of participating authors and local luminaries.

To commemorate 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, volunteers will distribute information to residents to better prepare their families for natural disasters before they happen. Join HandsOn New Orleans, Evacuteer.org, St. Anna's Episcopal church, and Volunteer Louisiana in this local service day effort. Volunteers will help assemble print material packets before distributing them to houses throughout the neighborhood, training families on how to prepare for hurricanes and prevent fires. Free hurricane preparedness starter kits will also be given out to families in the surrounding neighborhood.

HandsOn New Orleans connects the passions of volunteers to their purpose; Evacuteer.org recruits and trains New Orleanians to assist in the event of a future evacuation; Volunteer Louisiana builds and sustains high quality programs that meet the needs of Louisiana's citizens and promote an ethic of service.

Funny Bones Improv 3rd Annual Pregame Playdate

Want to make a difference in a child’s life? Become a CASA New Orleans Advocate! CASA New Orleans fights for the rights of abused and neglected children. CASA volunteers advocate on behalf of children (birth to 18+) in foster care. A CASA volunteer offers a child trust and advocacy during complex legal proceedings. Interacting and explaining to the child what is going on, the CASA may be the only stable and continuous presence in the child’s life.

The fourth annual Emeril Lagasse Foundation’s Bourbon, Boudin & Beer festival returns on November 7th at Champions Square. This celebration of Louisiana culture features boudin and artisan sausages from 50 of the country’s best chefs. Abita will pour its flagship beers and specialty selections, and Buffalo Trace will provide an array of bourbon cocktails. Grace Potter will headline the roster of great music, including Brooklyn-based The Lone Bellow and Louisiana favorites Pine Leaf Boys and Sweet Crude. Co-chaired by Emeril Lagasse and Donald Link, the funds raised benefit Emeril Lagasse Foundation, which supports children’s educational programs, life skills development initiatives, culinary training, and cultural enrichment. Friends of the Cabildo is proud to announce a symposium in conjunction with the Bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans Weekend (Saturday, January 10th). Held at the Old U.S. Mint 3rd Floor Performance Space, Dr. Alan Taylor, 2014 and 1996 Pulitzer Prize Winner in History and University of Virgina Thomas Jefferson Foundation Professor of History, will present on the War of 1812 and his newest book The Internal Enemy: Slavery and the War in Virginia, 1772-1832.

A panel discussion will take place with Dr. Lawrence Powell and Dr. Clarence Mohr, moderated by Dr. Charles Chamberlain. Other lecturers include Dr. Lo Faber, recent Princeton University graduate and visiting Loyola University-New Orleans Visiting Professor, United States Military Academy – The History of Warfare Historian Dr. Joseph Stoltz and more to be announced.
