Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium seeking Bug Ambassador Volunteers

Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium is seeking to fill open volunteer positions within our Bug Ambassador program. This is ongoing.

Bug Ambassadors serve as the link between the animals that we house at Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium and the thousands of guests that visit our facility each year. Bug Ambassadors interpret live animal exhibits, engage visitors in learning, and assist staff with live animal presentations.

Bug Ambassadors must be 16 years of age or older, complete the training course, and commit to one weekly shift for one year. A contribution of $30.00 helps cover costs of training materials and uniforms.

Veterans Housing is seeking sponsors for an Adopt A Disabled Homeless Veteran Program which includes a veteran's living expenses of $1000 per month (rent, deposit, lights, gas water, furnishing, bedding, personal items, washer and dryer, medical items and transportation and food, paper plates, cups, napkins etc.)

Captivated by the scenes of New Orleans and landscapes of France near his summer studio, James Michalopoulos evokes the spirit of the subject through beautifully layered, textured, and complex color compositions. The exhibition features original paintings from New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival posters, portraits, steel sculptures, and rarely seen works on paper, all enveloped in color by this celebrated New Orleans-based artist.

A self-guided iPad tour focuses on James Michalpoulos: Rapt in Color. It includes background information about the artist and gives participants the opportunity to engage in the art through a self-guided tour with questions and information for contemplation. During six weekly rehearsals and a culminating performance at a top New Orleans music venue, adult musicians of varying degrees of experience are invited to hone their skills in performance, improvisation and music literacy while networking with potential collaborators and passing a good time in a light, supportive atmosphere. Under the direction of acclaimed musician-educator Khari Allen Lee, participants will explore the blues form through familiar styles of the Crescent City soundtrack such as Funk, R&B, Trad or Afro-Cuban. The St. Claude Food Truck Park will pop-up in a vacant lot at the corner of St. Claude Avenue and Feliciana Street. The park will come to life each Thursday - Saturday night from 6 – 9 p.m., offering neighborhood residents and visitors from across the city an opportunity to come together and dine on a variety of unique cuisines. There will be at least three food trucks at the park each night, rotating among the area’s most popular “meals on wheels.” Also available for purchase will be domestic and specialty beers that pair with the weekend’s food truck offerings.

This is one of the largest book sales in the New Orleans area, with over 65,000 items for sale, including gently used adult and children's books, puzzles, DVDs, CDs, video tapes, music tapes, and records, most priced from .50 to $3.00. This sale will feature an unusually large collection of railroad and WW II books. Auction items will include two books, Plantation Parade, signed by author Harnett T. Kane, and Civil War Battlefields, by George Grant and Michael Swift. An autographed picture of current LSU football coach Les Miles will also be auctioned.

The Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium will bring creepy and crawly visitors to Le Salon's Halloween Tea. During this three-course tea service, children and will enjoy Halloween-themed treats like ghostly tea sandwiches and pumpkin shaped cookies. Adults will relish seasonal offerings including a cocktail to start, autumn cran-apple harvest tea and pumpkin spice scones.

Each table will feature a creepy centerpiece from the Insectarium, and Audubon representatives will be present to explain all the creatures. Guests will also be entered to win two passes to the Audubon Zoo, Insectarium or Aquarium, raffled at each seating.

Costumes are encouraged for all.
