May 27, 2013, Memorial Day, Quarter Rat Monthly (QRM) is hosting a crawfish boil competition at Bayou Beer Garden in the Mid City neighborhood of New Orleans. The proceeds from the event will be directed to The Barman’s Fund, a group of local bartenders who pool tips to support the community. This month’s charities are STAIR, a group working one on one with students to assist them with reading skills, and Crescent City Lights Youth Theatre, to sponsor 4 children attending the summer program. There will be a $10 cover charge for the event and the QRM Boil Champion will be decided by tips collected at each table. At least 4 local businesses will be boiling.

On Saturday, June 1st there will be food trucks, Old New Orleans Rum, and more at the Old New Orleans Rum Distillery.

Beat those hurricane season blues! StormFest 2013 consists of several parts: a Preparedness Fair, an Outdoor Fest, and a Mini FilmFest, at Holy Angels in the Bywater.

Preparedness Fair includes Evacuteer.org, LA Bucket Brigade, LA-SPCA, St. Anna’s Medical Mission, NOLA Techie, Entergy New Orleans, and more. Outdoors at the Fest, music from the Goodchldren Band and the Bucket Brigade Drummers, a giant parachute, giant puppets, make-and-take bucket drums and magic pinwheels. Food and beverage vendors include Sankofa HEAL, Gimme Tacos, EmpaNOLA, and Austin’s Gourmet to Go.

Film screenings will take place in the Chapel, and include: “We Shall Not Be Moved”, “Hexing a Hurricane”, “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore”, “Musical Therapy”, and “Flood Streets”.

Following the Fest, we will gather and process to the River for Horns Against Hurricanes, a musicians ritual since 2007.

CASA New Orleans (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is an agency that advocates on behalf of children (birth to 18+) who have been judged victims of abuse and/or neglect. A CASA volunteer offers a child trust and advocacy during complex legal proceedings. Interacting and explaining to the child what is going on, the CASA may be the only stable and continuous presence in the child’s life.

The duties carried out by a CASA are extremely important. No special education or skills are required. We provide thorough training and continual support.

The Homer A. Plessy Community School will hold its second annual All Aboard Gala on Friday, June 7th, 2013 6:30-9:30 pm at the Marigny Opera House, 725 St. Ferdinand Street, New Orleans. The All Aboard Gala will feature live music from Kiyoko McCrae, Michael James and the Valparaiso Men's Chorus, delectable food, beer & wine and a silent auction stocked with gift certificates, jewelry, wine, objects of art and other choice items. Proceeds will help fund academic programs at the Homer A. Plessy Community School, a new arts-integrated public charter school opening in August 2013 in the Bywater neighborhood. Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra present an encore New Orleans Jazz Institute Masters Series performance dedicated to pianist and Marsalis family patriarch Ellis Marsalis, producer, composer and arranger Harold Battiste, and the late drummer James Black. Special guests will include Ellis Marsalis and George Rodrigue.

A partnership with the George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts, the night will also feature The Rodrigue Steinway "Blue Dog Piano." The piano – painted by renowned Louisiana artist George Rodrigue and donated by Hall Piano Company – will benefit LSU's School of Music and the arts in education initiatives of GRFA.

Each year, Forum 35 hosts an unveiling of the Art Melt exhibit for an exclusive group of invested individuals. The Louisiana Book Festival is back for its tenth installment! Louisiana’s world-class celebration of readers, writers and their books will return to Baton Rouge from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, in downtown Baton Rouge.
