4th Annual Louisiana Swamp Stomp Festival

Live Cajun and Zydeco music ‘down the bayou’ comes to Nicholls State University in Thibodaux the weekend of March 16-18. It may be St. Patrick’s Day celebrations elsewhere, but in in LaFouche Parish the Cajuns are getting together for a real stomp with some of the stalwarts of South Louisiana music.

The Savoy Family Band, Steve Riley, Bruce Daigrepont, Waylon Thibodaux and Horace Trahan are just some of the names scheduled for the weekend. Two stages will feature these and other musicians playing some of the best Cajun and Zydeco music around. Chubby Carrier will be playing a special concert the day before the fest opens.

Zydeco and Cajun dance lessons are scheduled every day of the festival as well. The Treater Band will perform during the lessons on the first day. The lessons begin on Friday at 9 a.m. until noon at the Cypress Stage. Cameron Dupuy and the Cajun Troubadours play from noon until 1:45 p.m. – all of this before the official opening of the fest at 3:30.

A complete band schedule can be found at http://www.nicholls.edu/swamp-stomp/ band schedule.

In addition to all the live music there is food and a number of programs on the history, culture and economic development of the area. The Bayou French Program is also very popular. Local artists and crafters will also have work on display.

Before the Fest begins, on March 15, there will be a special, free concert on the Nicholls campus with Grammy Award winner Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band. The concert is open to students, faculty, and staff of Nicholls State University, as well as the general public. The concert will be in front of the Bollinger Student Union, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

In conjunction with this concert Mr. Carrier will be presenting a class entitled “Zydeco from A to Z” from 9:30 am – 10:15 a.m. in La Bijou Theater in the Bollinger student Union.

After the Chubby Carrier concert, instructors from Zydeco-Cajun Dance Productions will be providing free dance lessons on the Wood in front of the student union from 12:30 to 1:30 PM. They will also be dancing and instruction during the concert.
