It started with that HUH! that was worked your core better than Pilates. It was the key ingredient in mambo music and the mambo was so popular that it worked itself into every musical style imaginable. R&B, blues, jazz and yep plenty of New Orleans music including the classic Mardi Gras Mambo.
In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Sweet Lorraine’s will host a 3-day community jazz festival from Friday, September 4, through Sunday, September 6. The event includes nightly performances by Norman Connors and Stephanie Jordan, as well as two days of live music featuring acts like Kermit Ruffins, Charmaine Neville, and the Treme Brass Band.
Project 30-90's eco-friendly music festival and art market hits New Orleans on September 5 in a new location: River City Plaza at Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World. The stage will be powered by solar energy and wind, and the event will rely heavily on recycling and carbon offsets. We also have the updated music schedule.
This week we tracked down bassist Jesse Boyd between gigs with Charmaine Neville, Bob French, and his own band, and put him on the hot seat. The versatile virtuoso also recently celebrated the release of his new CD, True Stories, which has flavors of modern jazz and film scores.
Trumpeter Irvin Mayfield presents a series of six concerts entitled “The Love Sessions” at the Jazz Playhouse in the Royal Sonesta Hotel. The 7th Ward native helped establish the modern brass band sound in New Orleans and pushed the boundaries of playing big brass. His band, Backyard Groove, plays all over town at clubs like Le Bon Temps Roulé and d.b.a.
Guitarist, entertainer, inventor, and recording pioneer Les Paul passed away on August 13 at the age of 94. His musical career spanned an astonishing eight decades, and the guitar he designed with Gibson is one of the most recognizable in the world.
