Venue Description

A unique coalition of artists, community groups, churches and business owners on August 9th will launch St. Claude Sankofa Marketplace, a monthly venue for a farmer’s market, crafts market, health fair and entertainment that will help spur restoration, economic growth and community development in the Lower 9th Ward.

The goal is to provide an open-air market for people to gather, exchange information and buy healthy, fresh foods. “The St Claude Sankofa Marketplace will be a channel for economic development and community strengthening; encouraging businesses to return to the area. We are interested in stimulating repopulation of this area. A farmer’s market is vital here. There are no grocery stores in the Lower 9th Ward,” said Rashida Ferdinand, President of Historic Lower 9th Ward Council for Arts and Sustainability.

Sankofa is an Akan language word from the Asante people of Ghana, West Africa that means: the past must be reclaimed as we move forward and build for our future.
