Snoozer Quinn Film Debut
Thursday, March 18 from 6-8 p.m.
The Louisiana State Museum and Tulane University present “The Search for Snoozer Quinn” at the U.S. Mint located at 400 Esplanade. This event celebrates the discovery and preservation of materials related to the great Louisiana jazz guitarist Eddie “Snoozer” Quinn who died in 1949. Free and open to the public, the event will feature a reception with live music, a short lecture and an exhibition of photographs, instruments and other mementos, as well as the debut of never-before-seen film footage of Quinn.
Called by the late Danny Barker “the best of all time,” Quinn was a virtuoso guitarist from Bogalusa who played with Louis Armstrong, Paul Whiteman and the Dorsey brothers. He had an important role in the development of jazz guitar; he’s been called a missing link between country blues guitarists and early jazz soloists like Eddie Lang and George Van Eps.
Census Awareness Event: Come To Your Senses
Thursday March 18, 5 p.m
New Orleans Visual Audio is hosting a Census 2010 Emergency Awareness Event entitled “Come To Your Senses” at Howlin Wolf, on March 18 from 5 p.m. until 2 a.m. The goal of this workshop, panel and concert will be to promote awareness of the 2010 Census through an open forum discussion, education exhibits, and concert performance. Speakers and performers participating at the event include: Kermit Ruffins, Cyril Neville, Chief Kevin Goodman, Chief Brick Young, Chief Kenny Young, Ernie Vincent, Bo Dollis Jr., Tabula Rasa, and more.
In the past, the New Orleans metropolitan region has traditionally been uncounted every decennial Census campaign. For the City of New Orleans, the stakes of the 2010 Census are high. An undercount of 50,000 residents would mean a loss of $155.5 million in federal funds needed for school lunch programs, services for the elderly and homeless, police protection, schools, and other community programs. Also, for the first time in the history of the city, there will be a count of the local American Indian population.
