Music is "all the way live" and well in New Orleans and the trickle down is causing a swell of live broadcasts on the airwaves at 'OZ.
Recently, our listeners have been radio-teleported to Lafayette Square in the heart of the Central Business District for the Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival, to the far reaches of City Park for Voodoo Music Experience, and El Sido's, a zydeco joint nestled in Lafayette, Louisiana. And we've been busy recording for posterity at local music clubs all over town such as Mid-City Rock n' Bowl, the Saturn Bar and the ever-venerable Snug Harbor.
Headin' right atcha next week is the Oak Street Po-Boy Festival in the Carrollton neighborhood Uptown, one of several hip areas redefining the "new" New Orleans. We'll be broadcasting live, right from Oak Street, so scroll down for the line-up.
But, this is New Orleans. There's always more! At 'OZ we're all excited about the rebirth of a host of "what-is-old-is-new" venues: Café Istanbul re-emerging in the Bywater; the exquisitely redesigned performance hall in the U.S. Mint, back of the French Quarter; and the renaissance of the retro Joy Theater on Canal Street, to be inaugurated before the end of the year.

On November 20, the best of the best sandwich shops and restaurants line up on Oak Street to celebrate New Orleans' beloved patron saint of sandwiches -- The Po-Boy. Complete with music, fun, and (obviously) food, WWOZ will be broadcasting 101 Runners, Joe Krown with Russel Batiste, Jr. and Walter "Wolfman" Washington, The Revivalists, and Papa Grows Funk live.
Come hang out at the WWOZ booth, where you can chat with 'OZ staff and volunteers and where we'll be selling 'OZ gear for the holidays. So, stay tuned and while you wait for the day to arrive, check out photos from last year.

It's no secret what listener-supported WWOZ has to be thankful for this year - you! We are extremely grateful to all of our new and renewing members over the past year (450 more than last year!), and we want to wish you all a happy Thanksgiving! Your contributions go towards vital projects like the digitization of our archives, volunteer training, realtime playlists, second line coverage and of course they help keep the greatest station in the nation serving up hot and spicy music for your ears to gobble up! We had such a fun time last year celebrating our 30th anniversary that we've decide to hold another 'OZ second line and birthday bash on December 3rd, because in this town, who doesn't love a reason to celebrate? Meet us at the neutral ground at Elysian Fields Ave. and Chartres St. at 11:30 a.m. for our second annual birthday second line. We'll be doing a loop through the quarter, and disbanding at Barracks and French Market Pl. Stay tuned for more details and a route sheet!

Russell Shelton, a transplant from Oklahoma City, is a young drummer who fell in love with the Crescent City during a short trip in his junior year of high school. Shortly after that visit, Russell reconnected with the spirit of New Orleans when he started to meet and befriend students from New Orleans who began attending Bishop McGuinness High School along with him, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
