Fourth Annual Southern Sideshow Hootenanny Presents “Growing Up Sideshow” The Southern Sideshow Hootenanny brings three nights of the weird and wonderful work of sideshow to Café Istanbul March 23rd – 25th. February 12, 2018 (New Orleans) – Friday, March 23rd, the Southern Sideshow Hootenanny starts with the first of three explosive nights of entertainment. This year’s theme, “Growing Up Sideshow” highlights both performers that have literally grown up in the circus sideshow world and how performers that have become involved with circus sideshow as adults have been changed by the experience. Friday night starts with a special lecture from James Taylor, the world’s foremost expert on circus sideshow and alternative variety entertainment. Mr. Taylor will be presenting an all-new lecture and celebrating the upcoming release of the latest edition of his popular Shocked and Amazed! series. Following the lecture is The Innovators Show, a showcase of performers that are pushing the limits of their art. The show will be hosted by New Orleans’ own Dante, a familiar face in the cabaret scene and will present a diverse cast from all corners of the country and even as far as the UK. Saturday night features the veritable “main event” – The All Stars and Living Legends show, featuring the best and the brightest in the industry. The night will be hosted by Tommy Breen of the World of Wonders fame and will feature a special tribute to recently passed sword swallower, Johnny Fox, as well as a set from Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree, Aye Jaye, who spent years entertaining youngsters, U.S. presidents, the Queen of England and countless others as Ronald McDonald. Finally the weekend wraps up with the Hootenanny’s first ever family-friendly show. Hosted by last year’s Performers of the Weekend award winners, Captain and Maybelle from Atlanta, GA, the annual Troupe Night show will feature three troupes, including the FreakShow Deluxe Family with the world’s youngest professional knife thrower. The Southern Sideshow Hootenanny is the only professional development weekend/festival dedicated exclusively to circus sideshow in the country. Founded in 2014, with it’s premiere in 2015, the Southern Sideshow Hootenanny works throughout the year to fulfill it’s mission of preserving the traditions of this uniquely American art form while fostering growth throughout the community as a whole.
