P.3Reads: Keith Calhoun and Chandra McCormick in conversation with Kalamu ya Salaam

DATE
Thu, Aug 21, 2014
TIME
6:00pm - 7:00pm

P.3 artists Keith Calhoun and Chandra McCormick have been documenting the African American
community in New Orleans and its surrounding areas for the past three decades with both photographic
and video work. Their work chronicles the unique traditions and deep-rooted elements of Louisiana culture
that increasingly represent a vanishing way of life. The artists will share how Kalamu ya Salaam, New
Orleans performance poet, dramatist, fiction writer, editor and activist (to name but a few important ways
he has contributed to his city and people) has inspired their practice. Together all three will discuss their
collaborative unpublished work Banana Republic, Black Street Life and Culture in New Orleans, a book
about, in the words of the poet: “the sights, sounds, feelings and meanings of under-recorded, seldom
documented aspects of our culture.”
