MYSTERY TRAIN weaves together the stories of teenage Japanese tourists, a sorrowful Italian widow, and a downtrodden British immigrant. All are luckless, passing through, searching, and haunted by the faded glory of Elvis, Sun Records, and Stax. This downcast comedy plays out in post-industrial isolation: in shuttered streets and crumbling buildings, dive bars, all-night liquor stores, and rundown hotels. Jarmusch’s vision of late-‘80s Memphis revels in the seedy mysteries of a lost city haunted by the giants of its music and the ghosts of its past, combining the comic absurdity of his best-known work with his unique and unmistakable darkness.
