THE JAZZ REVIVAL REVISTED
Two leading exponents of the traditional New Orleans clarinet style, Tom Sancton and Dr. Michael White, celebrate the so-called jazz revival that began in the 1950s and ’60s. Sancton learned at the feet of George Lewis and other traditional greats at Preservation Hall and was a member of the Olympia Brass Band; White cut his teeth with the Doc Paulin Brass Band, later played at Preservation Hall, and went on to international fame leading his own group and recording with Wynton Marsalis and other latter day jazz stars. The two clarinetists will discuss the jazz revival and play musical tribute to some of its leading figures—including George Lewis, Papa Celestin, Sweet Emma Barrett, and Kid Thomas Valentine.
