Shotgun Cinema presents THE GLEANERS AND I

DATE
Wed, Mar 12, 2014
TIME
7:00am - 10:00am

Director Agnès Varda, referred to as the “Grande Dame of the French New Wave,” hits a high point in her prolific career with THE GLEANERS AND I, a ruminative film essay that explores the significance of foraging. By connecting different methods of gleaning – from nomadic gypsies in the French countryside scavenging picked-over fields to activists trying to reduce wasteful practices in Parisian markets – Varda finds her way back to her own career in which she “gleans” images to create films. This poetic documentary marks Varda’s first foray into digital filmmaking, in her fifth decade as a filmmaker.

Preceding THE GLEANERS AND I will be a brief except from French filmmaker Vincent Ducarne’s work-in-progress debut feature, THE IMPOSSIBLE PLACE. This experimental nonfiction explores the slow, meandering moments that encapsulate the life aboard a transatlantic cargo ship. Ducarne will be in attendance to introduce the clip and answer questions.
