"Musically Speaking:" free screening of 'Black Wax' featuring Gil Scott-Heron

DATE
Tue, Jan 7, 2014
TIME
7:00pm - 8:30pm

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Robert Mugge, Black Wax is a fascinating portrait of Gil Scott-Heron, the revered poet/musician/composer/"bluesologist" at his 1982 birthday concert at the Wax Museum nightclub in Washington D.C., backed by his 10-piece Midnight Band, and interspersed between scenes of him discussing Reagan-era politics, visiting national monuments, and touring a wax museum among other sites in inner-city D.C. Time Out London writes, "Admirers of the special blend of tight jazzy funk and intelligently political lyrics that are the hallmark of Scott-Heron will find much to enjoy in this engaging documentary." (1982, 79 min.)

MUSICALLY SPEAKING is a series of music-themed movie and documentary screenings, curated/hosted by DJ Soul Sister, & co-presented monthly by Soul Sister, Charitable Film Network, & WWOZ FM. Free admission. Info: mail@charitablefilmnetwork.org
