"Musically Speaking:" free screening of 'A Band Called Death' at New Orleans Comedy Theater

DATE
Tue, Dec 10, 2013
TIME
7:00pm - 8:45pm

Punk rock before punk existed, 3 teenage brothers in Detroit in the early '70s formed a band in their bedroom, began playing local gigs & even pressed a single in the hopes of getting signed. But in the soul music era, record companies found Death’s music— and band name—too intimidating, and the group were never given a shot. Equal parts electrifying rockumentary & epic family love story, 'A Band Called Deat'h chronicles the incredible fairy-tale journey of what happened 3 decades later, when a dusty 1974 demo tape made its way out of the attic & found an audience several generations younger. Playing music impossibly ahead of its time, Death is now being credited as the 1st black punk band.(2013, 96 min.)

MUSICALLY SPEAKING is a series of music-themed movie and documentary screenings, curated/hosted by DJ Soul Sister, & co-presented monthly by Soul Sister, Charitable Film Network, & WWOZ FM. Free admission. Info: mail@charitablefilmnetwork.org
