A traditional Jazz Mass in remembrance of one of the earliest civil rights battles in American history, the landmark “War of the Pews” in 1842, when the free Blacks of Tremé provided the first exclusive place of worship for the enslaved in America. Accompaniment for this unique musical and religious experience will be provided by the Original Pinettes Brass Band, in honor of their place in history as the world’s first and currently only all-woman brass band.
