The Guardians Institute, New Orleans Musicians' Assistance Fund, The Anthropology Department at the University of New Orleans and Mardi Gras Indian Hall of Fame present “Drum Circle: The Beat Goes On . . .” A panel discussion and performance exploring the retention and role of West African drums rhythms and song forms in current Mardi Gras Indian music traditions.
Participants include Big Chief Darryl Montana, Big Chief Brian Harrison Nelson, Chief Donald Claude, Luther Gray, Wesley Phillips, Ajay Mallery, DJ Hektik and ethnomusicologist Ibraheima Seck. The panel will conclude with a performance demonstration by panelists and the Mardi Gras Indian Collective in full regalia. This presentation will be facilitated Queen Cherice Harrison-Nelson.
