We will hold this community action on the 50th Anniversary of Rev. Dr. King’s prophetic “I Have A Dream” speech, in which the civil rights leader articulated an inspiring vision of racial equality and opportunity for all. Mass incarceration fundamentally dishonors Rev. Dr. King’s vision. As you know, Louisiana has the highest incarceration rate in the world, and 1 in 7 African-American males in New Orleans is either incarcerated, on parole, or on probation. At this community action/faith revival, our clergy and lay leaders will:
- Examine the issue of mass incarceration through the lens of our faith
- Educate people about the public decisions that are driving the mass incarceration crisis
- Announce the launch of a voter engagement project in preparation for the February 2014 local elections in New Orleans and a statewide sentencing reform campaign.
