Each year, Jazz at Lincoln Center & artistic dir. Wynton Marsalis host the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Competition in NY. The film follows a public high school from FL, as they compete w/elite bands from around the US. Inspired by the jazz community, the students humbly recognize the honor of carrying on the legacy of the masters while watching the culmination of their hard work: an electrifying performance where they realize that no matter how much one prepares, sometimes life, like jazz, calls for improvisation. Drummer Jamison Ross, featured in the film, will be in attendance for a Q&A. Ross is the winner of the 2012 Thelonious Monk Intl Jazz Competition & Concord Jazz recording artist. International Jazz Day screening. 2009, 88 min.
