JPAS presents Making the Grade!
A fundraiser featuring
The JPSO Band of Excellence
Please join JPAS, Fresh – N – Stainless Dance Group, and the Jefferson Parish Band of Excellence in a fundraiser that will help create a better future for our people: physically, mentally, and socially.
Are you ready to cut a rug with one of the best bands in town? Are you ready to make a positive difference in your community? Well, you are in luck! The Jefferson Performing Arts Society Cultural Crossroads program will be introducing a new program this Saturday, January 19, 2013 called, Making the Grade: an interactive program that involves healthy living and the art of dance.
JPAS Making the Grade (MTG) proposes that if a child is not physically, mentally, socially and emotionally healthy, they won't learn at their maximum capacity. The arts address the emotional and social health of a child. The can also address the physical health of that child and their family if the art form is a physical activity. Dance is an aerobic exercise. It has long been believed the patterns, sequences, and rhythms in dance all provide natural connections to mathematics.
JPAS MTG will specifically target under-‐performing low income at-‐risk students. JPAS will offer programming on both the East and Westbank of Jefferson Parish and in St. Bernard Parish. JPAS MTG is the first U.S. research study exploring the correlation between exercise and student achievement— previous studies that found the correlation exercise improves cognition studied adults, not youth. In these days of high-‐stakes testing we think it would be amazing to develop an innovative initiative backed by scientific research that would use the arts to help students succeed academically and change focus so that aerobic exercise becomes a lifelong habit.
Heading up this adventure, is Jermy “Lucky Lou” Tassin. Mr. Tassin has been a fixture in the New Orleans hip-‐scene for years: not only as a performer, but also as a mentor. He is the founder and coach of the Fresh -‐ N -‐ Stainless Dance Group, an organization designed to keep at-‐risk youths off the streets by providing them with a safe and enjoyable creative outlet. Members of the dance company will also be instructors for Making The Grade (MTG)
