On Tuesday November 20, 2012 Xavier University will host a lecture and concert entitled NEW ORLEANS JAZZ: A METAPHOR FOR AMERICAN LIFE. This timely and unique program will examine how the early jazz style, more than just entertainment, was a living exercise in democratic ideals that lie at the core of American values: freedom, unity, equal participation, etc. In addition to a discussion of the music’s history and functions, there will be live examples of song types and stylistic characteristics that influenced and forever changed national culture and music.
The program will feature Dr. Michael White, Keller Endowed Chair in the Humanities at Xavier, who is also a well-known jazz clarinetist and historian. Accompanying White will be the much heralded Original Liberty Jazz Band, widely considered to be among the best traditional jazz bands.
