Free admission/refreshments. Cash bar. A Q&A with original members of the Kashmere Stage Band follows the film.
Alumni from Houston's famed Kashmere High School Stage Band return home after 35 years to play a tribute concert for beloved bandleader who turned the struggling jazz band into a world-class funk powerhouse in early 1970s. As his students prepare to pay tribute to the now 92-year old "Prof." who changed their lives (some haven't played their horns in decades), they dust off their instruments determined to retake the stage to show Prof & the world they've still got it. Released in 2010 & backed by exec prod Jamie Foxx, Thunder Soul earned a 2011 NAACP Image Award nomination for Best Documentary. This screening is co-sponsored by Ponderosa Stomp Foundation, and is part of MUSICALLY SPEAKING, a new series of music-themed movies and documentaries on selected Mondays, curated/hosted by DJ Soul Sister, and co-presented by Press Street, Charitable Film Network & WWOZ.
