My jazz education involved mostly artists who played instruments, not vocalists. There were really only three vocalists who were deemed by my mentor to be worthy of intense study: Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan.

George Wein commissioned Duke Ellington to pen "New Orleans Suite" for the 1970 New Orleans Jazz Festival, and Duke did not disappoint. I'm listening to it now, and think it would be a fine way to spend some time reflecting on the disaster of five years ago and glorying in the wonder that is New Orleans.

Blindfold Test!

In Downbeat Magazine, there's a section in the back entitled, "Blindfold Test," where DB would pose a series of recordings to a jazz artist and ask him to identify the musician merely by listening.
