There are innumerable Americana songs with Chinese themes. Perhaps more about China than all the other Asian countries combined. Maybe it's because the stereotypical riff of Chinese music sounds so much like the cha cha progression.
Another in our series of Saturday night bedtime stories from the BYO folks who sponsor pop up story-telling events in New Orleans backyards. Their next event is Sunday, October 21st at 1649 N. In backyards across New Orleans, the 100 members of BYO gather to tell stories that are live, unscripted, and true to the teller. Last Saturday night, we featured a recording of Elizabeth Steeby's story of guns, guts and a woman's rite of passage.
24 years ago (September 12th, 1988), Jamaica was blasted by the then category three storm, Hurricane Gilbert. On its way to the Yucatan, Gilbert became a huge category five hurricane with 185mph winds and a then record-setting 888 millibars of low pressure.
