'5 things to know' is a weekly feature highlighting different parts of the WWOZ world that you may have missed this week, including unique WWOZ programming and video, plus New Orleans events, artists, releases, features, and more.

For the week ending March 3, 2016:

1. PBS aired a new documentary examining the early life and work of Fats Domino on his 88th birthday last Friday, February 26. 'The Big Beat' includes rare footage of Fats' early shows and interviews with Dave Bartholomew, Cosimo Matassa, Allen Toussaint, and many other people important to Fats' career. You can watch it online till March 25.

2. VIP Ladies & Kids Second Line rolls this Sunday at noon. Find the route sheet and hear Action Jackson's interview with club president Tamara Jackson at Takin' It To The Streets.

3. Check out this in-depth review of "The Good Times Rolled: Black New Orleans, 1979-1982" from DJ Nita K, host of the Thursday edition of the New Orleans Music Show. This vivid photography book captures an important evolution point in New Orleans history.

4. 2016 Essence Fest lineup was announced. Performers this year include New Breed Brass Band, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Leon Bridges, and 2015 WWOZ Piano Night performers the Robert Glasper Experiment.

5. This week's new music spotlight focused in on Michael Cerveris and his album Piety. Cerveris is a Tony Award-winning actor who splits his time between Broadway and New Orleans. He's joined by a bevy of local artists on this release, one of the last recorded at Piety Street Studios.
