The Lower 9th Ward is celebrating the opening of a new, state-of-the-art community center this week. The Sanchez Community Center replaces a slightly smaller community center that was destroyed in the flooding following Hurricane Katrina. Stride piano pioneer William Henry Joseph Bonaparte Bertholoff Smith (1893-1973), a.k.a. Willie "The Lion" Smith, does a remarkable 6-song, 28 minute set on the BBC in 1965.
