'5 things to know' is a weekly feature highlighting different parts of the WWOZ world that you may have missed this week, including unique WWOZ programming and video, plus New Orleans events, artists, releases, places, features, and more.

For the week ending March 18, 2016:

1. Our 2016 Spring Membership Drive is in the books as of 2p, Friday, March 18 and it was a good one! A huge thank you to all of the new and renewing members and donors! And a special thanks to all of the musicians and guests who came in to show their support for WWOZ, the volunteers who contribute so much of their time and energy during our drives, and to our food donors, who keep us all going!

2. See video highlights from the 2016 Membership Drive from the amazing array of local artists who performed in our studio: Irma Thomas (see below), Little Freddie King, Meschiya Lake & the Little Big Horns (below), Soul Brass Band, Steve Malinowski, Luke Winslow King, Shotgun Jazz Band, Mitchell Player & the 504 Experience, and the Original PInettes Brass Band, to name just a few!

3. The WWOZ Board of Directors released a statement of principles at the beginning of this week, stating first and foremost that "WWOZ’s mission is, has been and will always be 'to be the worldwide voice, archive, and flag-bearer of New Orleans culture and musical heritage' - preserving and presenting our unique cultural heritage."

4. It's St. Joseph's Night and Super Sunday this weekend! At sunset on March 19, the Mardi Gras Indians will don their elaborate suits of beads and feathers in neighborhoods throughout New Orleans and play out ritual confrontations with song and dance. On Sunday, a Mardi Gras Indian procession will begin at A.L. Davis Park around 11am. For more info, see Takin' It To The Streets.

5. Two new music spotlights to highlight here. Last week's spotlight focused on WWOZ CD-44, 'If Only You Knew,' available only during this membership drive! 'If Only You Knew' features performances from Khari Allen Lee, Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet, Margie Perez & Muevelo, Jorge Luis Pacheco, Jarekus Singleton, Erica Falls, Kenny Brown featuring Alvin Youngblood Hart, Colin Lake, and Ivan Neville & Dumpstaphunk.

This week's spotlight shines on Little Maker, a New Orleans group that takes early influences and spins them with a modern sound that might appeal to fans of groups like the Black Keys, Neutral Milk Hotel, Peter & the Wolf, and My Morning Jacket. "Our music is for music listeners and we are really lucky to live in a city where people really do enjoy listening to music," songwriter Micah McKee told nola.com last April.
