'5 things to know' is a weekly feature highlighting different parts of the WWOZ world that you may have missed this week, including unique WWOZ programming and video, plus New Orleans events, artists, releases, places, features, and more.

For the week ending February 12, 2016:

1. Mardi Gras 2016 was February 9 and New Orleans was in the streets! The Mardi Gras Indians debuted their new suits the morning of Fat Tuesday. WWOZ's syndicated radio show, New Orleans Calling, got a few Indians to share details of their dedication to preserving this vibrant and evolving tradition, from the oldest living Mardi Gras Indian to some of the youngest.

2. Big Chief Kevin Goodman and Big Chief Alfred Doucette of the Flaming Arrow Mardi Gras Indians sat down for an interview with ya' boy Action Jackson of WWOZ's Takin' It To the Streets. They discussed the importance of Indians in the community and their efforts to carry on the late Travis "Trumpet Black" Hill's legacy with Trumpets Not Guns via Tambourines Not Guns.

3. Tickets for Piano Night 2016, the flagship benefit event for WWOZ, are available now. Piano Night celebrates the rich New Orleans piano tradition and has become a tradition among New Orleans music lovers and loyal fans all over the world. This one-of-a-kind benefit concert for WWOZ is held each year on the Monday night between the two New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival weekends.

4. Applications for Class Got Brass, a Jazz & Heritage Foundation-sponsored contest open to all Louisiana middle and high schools, are open now. Class Got Brass challenges bandleaders and students to create traditional New Orleans-style brass bands to compete for more than $30,000 worth of instruments for the participating schools' music programs. This year, partners at the Preservation Hall Foundation are providing additional resources to help band directors prepare their students for the Class Got Brass competition, including free in-school clinics run by Pres Hall band members, sheet music, and online resources. Applications close March 7.

5. Our new music spotlight focused on Roar!, a fun New Orleans-based duo that incorporates electronics into trombone, vocals, and live drumming into pop and punk music. Their new EP, Paint the City, mixes loops and effects with instrumentation to create a cheerful sound.
